Went out for an hour on the ninja after changing the brakes as it's officially not fking Baltic here anymore with a force nine gale.

They were fking awesome once I scrubbed the pads in, it stops as good a modern bike now. Still felt like there was a bit of air in the lines so bled it and even washed the thing.
Looks great smile

It was goodbye to this faithful steed today, 8 years, 20,000 miles, 2 engines (BMW corrosion scandal), 6 euro tours, 13+ foreign countries, many memories, I hope the next rider gets as much pleasure from their ownership as I did

What's the corrosion scandal?

Is it the 800 or 1200?

Nice mate is that the full Hel radial caliper conversion? Good to hear it's a big improvement...a lot of money to spend on an old bike unless you got a good deal on them!

Just back from a trip to the bottom right hand corner of Ireland, in search of our Maud's ancestral roots.

Took the overnight ferry from Liverpool to Belfast, which was very civilised.

Covered 750 miles two up over 4 days. Only got properly wet once.

Pleased to report that the bike didn't miss a beat, despite being over 40 years old.

Awesome. I had an R100S new in 1977 or 78 cant quite remember. A mighty quoted 68 bhp but it was just fine. Did everything I needed at the time.

Have fun on the CS.

Yeah, I got a deal, £650 for the Hel calipers and radial mount, £40 for a set of pads, so I got 2 sets at that price, and free front and back lines flung in. Burst my baws buying a double banjo light switch at £30 though.

I'll never sell the ninja it was my first real bike, even if it dies I can use the calipers on something else. Actually....... fk the m/c £175, I forgot about that.....so all in about £900....... eek the bikes only worth £1500...... I was gonna go down the line of £1400's worth of new suspension next..... but when you put it like that.

Strange, it took zero convincing from the guy at the stand to sell me these, yet I've been arguing with the lassie at the roll van to sell me soup by the bag instead of by the cup so I can save a few quid a week.

68 bhp is plenty.

Ours has been over bored from 980 to 1001cc, ported heads, straight through silencers and high compression pistons.

It goes like a bomber, but the forks and brakes struggle to keep up.

It's far too noisy for touring and pinks on 97 octane petrol, which is a bit of an issue when plonking around rural Ireland, where 95 seems to be all there is on offer.

Will re-fit the standard exhaust and take some octane booster next time.

New to me this weekend.

Few hundred miles, mainly Dales / Peaks, lots of fun.

Based on a few of the comments on here regarding GSs I expected to be blanked at best by fellow bikers on the roads, if not openly mocked or dragged from my bike, tarred & feathered - but everyone seemed perfectly friendly, lots of exchanges of nods and acknowledgement - as it should be smile

I got no issue with just any bike on the road but dont like it when I see a group of these wearing the hi vis 'polite' and get the hump when I casually pass them with them then making comments. I know this happens as once a group had open mesh on their sena and I had mine running but wasn't talking. When I passed they said within their group 'f**in idiot its a 40, 50 etc limit' which I was maybe a bit over and then proceeded to go through some bends/roundabout lent over a bit (not knee down by any means) and more comments from them

At this point I said 'I can hear you' and then 'there are plenty of things I could say about you lot right now thinking you are some kind of 'polite' police'. I think they were more surprised as not a word was said after that.
The repeated GS mockery and categorisation of the riders makes me laugh. I have a GS1200 and I also have a Monster 1220R and a Honda VTR1000SP2. I wear the same kit when riding any of them and most importantly I'm the same person!! Nodding, waving to other bikers. If you saw me with the Honda at a meet would you treat me differently to if I was on my GS??

The front of the engine cover can corrode and quite a few get changed under warranty. Probably not painted correctly. I have an extended front fender on mine and don't understand why BMW don't fit them as standard (to stop chipping)

And yet on another topic I'm expressing admiration for the GS, there's a nice 2013 one at our work.

$hit the bed! I’ll have to go and check mine now.

What you replacing them with? More Brembo pads or are you thinking of trying something else?

I can’t remember the name of them right now? But I fitted a set of Brembo SC’s??? (Painted grey) to my S1000R and they were a big improvement over the OEM Brembo pads, I was thinking of giving them a try in this bike as well.

I'm not bothered either way about GS riders, but Birky's story is funny biggrin

Personally I can't see the attraction to riding around slowly in groups. A lot seem to love it.

Ah, that’s not ideal.
I take it the second option is so you can look all sad but upstanding for a hopefully lesser sentence?

Interesting that Ewan McGregor rides round on a 2005 GS that he's owned since new.

Saw a post on facebook

I had assumed that he would be on the latest being but to select that bike from his collection(?) must speak volumes for his love of that bike.
