Bikers. Don't come to Edinburgh.

I'm offended. Was hoping for the Daily Torygraph at least!I rarely use my bike for going in to Edinburgh these days unless I can access the secure underground parking at my sister-in-law's workplace. This in turn means that I don't bother going into Edinburgh much at all now - with a tiny consequential impact on the city's economy. With the seemingly growing number scallies doing whatever they want, the state of the roads, rising fuel costs & the forthcoming LEZ, I wonder if more & more of those who have the option to work from home will decide to do so. It's a lovely city in many respects - but I just can't be arsed with it any more.
WFH is the way forwards in many instances, but goes against many other interests unfortunately.
I would like to visit Scotland again later this summer, not sure of where yet (only managed as far as Jedburgh last year), but I’m getting old so hopefully it won’t get too sporting.

Why can't the Scottish Police knock them off like the English Police can these days?

and as for Edinburgh - we went last year for a day as part of the holiday, its a sst hole, the royal mile was just like blackpool but uphill with nothing but tat shops selling tat for hen parties, the main shopping street was just closed thanks to covid majority of shops closed down place - just a shadow of its former self like some ciites in the US
the only good thing, the tram on the way out to the car park
I disturbed a group of neds on peds having a go at a neighbour's bike a couple of weeks ago. 10.30 in the evening IIRC, and still a few people going about, so very brazen. They seemed to have pretty much given up for whatever reason by the time I shouted out a window at them and we "exchanged pleasantries" - I am not really sure what I'd have done if I had been closer against 5 or 6 folk tooled up - probably lucky for me I didn't find out. Clearly scoped it out beforehand as they rode straight to it and stopped right at it.
Called the polis asap, and to be fair to them 2 or 3 police cars turned up within 10-15 minutes - the ones that stayed while the rest tore off hoping to catch up with them explained how they can't pursue once they go off road, and even if they do catch them the number of times they have to be convicted before they get a custodial and the problem stops - they seemed desperate to catch the scrotes, but very frustrated by the various legal and resource impediments they were facing
My neighbour has since sold his bike

I've lived in or around Edinburgh all my life, and bike thefts do seem to be out of control at the moment. After university I worked for the Police as a temp collating and cataogrising crime reports, and it was always the usual suspects from Pilton/Muirhouse/Craigmillar etc.
I tend to go into Edinburgh 2-3 times a week on my bike from the gentile metropolis that is Gullane, and up until recently I've been quite relaxed about parking my bike on Waterloo Place or George St; I know Edinburgh really well, and feel "safe" there, so didn't really worry too much about my bike. Last month I was sitting in Starbucks on Leith Street when I heard revving bikes and saw people stopped and staring as two (stolen) bikes went racing up and down the street (one with three up, the other with two, with hoods and balaclavas). It was pretty intimidating so I called the Police, then made my way back to my bike sharpish. I was talking to a local police officer about it later, and she said officers are hamstrung as they can't pursue them if they don't have helmets on, and the scum know this.
The Scottish Government is taking a "softly softly" approach to sentencing, with the presumption against short sentences, so I doubt this situation will change any time soon. When I studied law many years ago, I remember one of my lecturers recounting the story of the Glasgow "chain gangs" of the 1960's IIRC; they went around coshing people with impunity with their weapon of choice (a motorbike chain). Fed up with the mayhem this was causing, a sentencing judge decided to forego the usual 2-3 year sentence, and started handing out hefty sentences of 15-20 years. It soon stopped the gangs.
If only we could adopt a similar approach now, although we would have to catch them first....
Sad to hear people up in Edinburgh are experiencing the same st that’s been happening in London for ages, I’m pretty certain the Met changed their stance about knocking the little fkers off, hopefully Police Scotland do the same!.I tend to go into Edinburgh 2-3 times a week on my bike from the gentile metropolis that is Gullane, and up until recently I've been quite relaxed about parking my bike on Waterloo Place or George St; I know Edinburgh really well, and feel "safe" there, so didn't really worry too much about my bike. The 'po-po' won't do anything about it?
That's a naive post.
If an officer did something about it and the person hits their head/etc he faces a very real prospect of losing his job and prison.
There was a recent case in the Met. Officer pit stopped a robber on a scooter, robber died. Officer is now facing manslaughter in court.
The law isn't created by the police. The police enforce it.

I had an email from the police the other day about my stolen motorcycle. I am advised the details will be passed on to local officers and the officer who emailed me will check for any cctv to get a better image of the person who stole it. This is a quote from the email:
"At the moment, until the bike is recovered there wont be much further enquiry we can do."
So basically that's it. I know I can't expect the world but this seems the bare minimum. Realistically the bike won't be 'recovered' but found burnt out somewhere. I know the bike is being ridden as recently as Wednesday so I am just hoping someone will see it and phone it in.

We are now experiencing a spate of motorcycle and moped thefts in South Devon. Apparently the Police are setting up a dedicated team to attempt to deal with this.
Also a lot of problems with illegal off road riding with many of the bikes neither taxed or insured, but ridden to location on the road...

I’m in Edinburgh 2-3 times a week and it’s a beautiful city; in fact we went in yesterday for a quick bite and then took a wander down the Royal Mile (busy with international tourists), then down the Mound and along George St. for a coffee, through the new St James centre then back to the car on Royal Terrace (past the charred Calton Hill).
To me it’s a vibrant city with beautiful architecture.
When we were leaving London we were deciding between Manchester or Edinburgh.
I made the mistake of chosing the former.
An amazing place. So many bars etc off the cobbles, backstreets etc.
I must admit I never go down that main shopping street where Renton shoplifted.
I visit Edinburgh.
If you haven't seen it watch Fire Saga thr film too!

Where I live in London, three or four years ago group of the feral little sts started riding around in packs on nicked bikes in broad daylight. No plates or helmets, faces covered, etc.
Then the cops adopted ramming.
The problem vanished as quickly as it had started.
But I'm sure Wee Krankie has a list of reason why "Police Scotland" (FFS....) is superior in every respect to anything south of the border.
That, or she's descended from neds herself.
Nicola Sturgeon and her “party “ is the biggest crisis ever to hit Scotland. She won’t inflict pain or inconvenience on any of the pond life ,scum sucking , fkwits of which you can pretty much bet these feral rats are descended from , as these are her voters. It’s only the law abiding tax payers whom will be victimised and left to pick up the pieces as the fuhrer herself knows there is no way on earth they would vote for her stshow.
