Damn you, the Mito is one of my favourite bikes and now that the idea of an rs250 engine swap is in my head I expect I will be losing garage space and a wad of cash with another project!
The 2 stroke rs250 is carb fed yes?

Yes, carb fed.

You need to use the 1KT side by side TZR engine, not sure how the RS250 would work - also doesn't the RS250 have the chain on the "wrong" side or is that only the 125?

If it would fit, I reckon a ktm injected 2 stroke would be a nice lump to transplant.

125 chain is on the right hand side for the newer models, left side for older and left side for the 250.

Singles aren't the ideal option for a supersport style bike.
Revs too low, wrong kind of power delivery etc and usually lots of vibes which is confirmed by the OP's CR500 powered Mito.
Great in theory but less than ideal in reality...

The RS motor is a great little engine but spares are getting hard to find, especially barrels.

Little update today - fitted a new Ducati master cylinder (brembo), new braided brake line and then bled it up with the new pads.

Yes, the RS250is bigger but a good one is very expensive now.
I paid £7,200 for my '99 MK2 with 10,500 miles. Its in good but not great condition

That sounds on the cheaper side. I would expect to pay £10k for a mint one with a fresh engine (Ish). It is easy to spend £5k to £8k building a refurbished mito with a bigger engine but I have built my ones out of partial bikes and 2 I came to own by accident. I find building them up over 12 months doesn’t feel like a cost whereas buying a bike for £7.5k is noticeable.

I think your RS will hold its money very well.

Came on to say that, I've come across a few with Rotax 650cc singles in and they just shake themselves to bits

Love it.

Liked the Mito when I was younger but although I've ridden a fair few 125 two strokes I missed out on actually owning one (having a 50cc when I was 16/17 and then jumping to a 200cc 4-stroke when I passed).

Still have a bit of a hankering after a decent 250!

There was even the Yamaha SRZ 660 which was a factory "special" basically being a TZR125RR fitted with a XTZ660 engine... From all accounts it was terrible.

On the subject of shaking themselves to bits I do remember a long time ago way back when there were a variety of motorcycle magazines there being a special featured in one which used an old British parallel twin in an RS250 or RGV250 chassis (it was a long time ago, I can't remember which one now). I bet that thing would shake your fillings out!

A British twin would be grim but a Honda CB500 liquid cooked twin...

I know a chap with a cb500 in one…people berated him for going 4 banger but I can see the appeal.

Wiring nearly finished. I just need the zeeltronic to arrive now.

I have used the mito switch gear and spliced what is needed to run the TZR in to that. The Yamaha past masters racers use a cut down loom so I used one of those.

Twin lectron carbs should mean it is easy to dial in- no messing with jetting.

The inlet is a custom billet to allow for the bigger carbs and rd350 / banshee reed cases. It positions the carbs higher up and it needs that to clear the engine.

The inlet has an internal cross over link with an o ring to seal it.

Ducati 916 light bowl in carbon and clocks wired in and mounted…just need to tidy the wiring once the new clock bulbs arrive.

Rev counter is aftermarket to work with the 250 engine. I have got all of the warning lights fitted. Just nee to find room for a shift light at 12,000 rpm.

I bought some tuned expansion chambers for a tzr 250 from Len at Merlin, he thinks these will be good road pipes, his engine dyno showed a largely standard engine made 58hp at 10,500. I have added tyga tail pipes.

I had to make a few mods to get them to fit the mito and then weld on some mounting points etc. they might need a tiny bit of alignment but happy with them.

Just waiting on the opposite Lectron carb to arrive from USA. I have wired in the zeeltronic and will build a base map then it’s off to the dyno for setup.
