advice on viper purchase and ownership

Hi, I am considering buying a viper and just wondering if they ever come up for sale?

any advice will be appreciated on ownership etc, out of choice I would rather avoid the convertible,

Avoid a convertible? Do you mean avoiding the RT10?

If so, I'm presuming you would like a gen 2 GTS. There has been a few changed hands recently, and there is a final edition (Red/White stripe) 2002 GTS which is possibly coming up for sale soon

Depends on your budget really, 5 years ago they were available in the 30's, but they have climbed in value since those days. There was a silver one for mid 40's but it's probably sold, and there is a supercharged blue one on Pistonheads now for 55k

There are 5 generations of Viper
So it would be helpful if you could narrow it down a bit.

I would rather a gen V , I viewed the white ACR at Tom Heartly but noticed the front bumper passenger side didn't line up correctly to the wing and hood,
it had been sprayed a different shade of white in that area,

I am open to the idea of an older one as long as it is very low miles and in perfect condition, obviously the price has to be right, don't want to pay over the top in case a more desireable one comes on the market,

Well the difference between Gen II and Gen V price and performance wise are leagues apart 450 HP from a stock Gen II at the flywheel compared to 650 HP with a Gen V

Very few Gen Vs in the UK only 2 ACR Gen Vs that I know of.


If you have the budget for a Gen V then importing one from the USA would be the way to go IMO

What you also have to factor in is that there is no dealership back up in the UK.

These cars are fairly easy to work on. Plugs, filters, etc. And there are general American car service companies out there
In the VOA ( viper owners association) we help each other out with general tech stuff.
Might be worth checking German used viper websites too.

Exchange rate has been crap for years.
In 2008 when I bought my car over I think it was something like 1.63 to the pound.!

Vipers have increased in price in Europe too, as owners we are happy
But prices are not as stupid as a MK1 Ford Escort!!!! Their prices are nuts.

All this talk of prices going up is funny. I had my GTS for sale for over a year and hardly a flicker of interest other than offers of 20-25k.

You struggle to find a lower mileage Viper (in the UK) than the 2006 gen 3 coupe which has been for sale for a few months in the classifieds. One of only 2 or 3 First Edition coupe's over here (I have one of them). Just over 1000 miles, 1 UK owner from new. The problem with such low mileage cars is a drop in value if you plan to drive them!

Nothing like a gen 5 ACR but less than half the price.

well a couple of weeks ago a silver Chrysler viper GTS coupe sold for £44000
Chrysler vipers (euro spec) are popular in France. Dodge not so much as the French bought in a new tax rule on import cars relating to engine size. If it's a Chrysler viper they don't have to pay the tax.

When I bought my Gen V, I looked at what it would cost me to import one from the US, then added a little for the easier transaction. I had the data to back my offer with the seller. The prices may have gone up but they are still an absolute bargain.
