Import VAT??

I’m new to this ordering from the US so forgive my ignorance but I’ve got a parcel coming from Jon b and I’ve been given customs charges for £54.93, the total bill from Jon was about $442 inc delivery etc so was wondering why it’s so high?
I’ve recently got parcels from rockauto and these came to my house very quickly and without these charges so I’m a bit confused by it all.
I know if I read through the government website it would explain but I’d rather hear it from you guys if ok?

Rock Auto Taxes are Pre paid.
Basically anything over £50.00 you will pay duty on and they add it up
£54.00 is not too bad on $442.00 Post office (royal you've been shafted Mail) would also add to that a £20.00 Handling fee

if you think that's ok then that's fine with me, like I said this is new to me so learning all the time at the moment.
