At last after three attempts to get through just spoken to the technical manager re the Viper recall.

The good news is it will happen and as per US cars it relates to mods to the steering rack and a visual inspection of the diff only on cars from 1996-2000 (which I suspect are the years Chrysler imported the GTS), Gen1 cars are not effeced

I suspect that they are dragging there heals as the 'Service Sheet' relates to cars only driven aggressivly or used for racing/time trials.......which would invalidate your warranty in the UK...see this weeks Auto Express.

Offical Recall info pasted below,

Year: 1996 Make: DODGE Model: VIPER Recall Date: 10/09/2001

Type of Report: Vehicle
Potential Number of Units Affected: 4645
Manufactured: 06/1995 - 03/1999

Defect Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES USED EXTENSIVELY IN TRACK TYPE RACING EVENTS AND SUBJECTED TO AGGRESSIVE DRIVING CONDITIONS COULD EXPERIENCE CRACKS AT THE WELDS OF THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL MOUNTING BRACKET.

Consequence Summary:
THE CRACKS COULD EVENTUALLY LEAD TO METAL FATIGUE AND DISLODGING OF THE DIFFERENTIAL MOUNTING BRACKET FROM THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE. SEPARATION OF THE DIFFERENTIAL MOUNTING BRACKET COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL.

Corrective Summary:
ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES WILL HAVE A FIELD REPAIR KIT INSTALLED. VEHICLES EXHIBITING CRACKS WILL REQUIRE AN ADDITIONAL WELD REPAIR PRIOR TO INSTALLATION OF THE KIT.

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 01V313000
Component: STEERING:GEAR:RACK
Manufacturer: DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION

It is probable that this will only effect cars that have been track run with slicks.

The bad news is that unless you purchased your car from a UK dealer you will not be provided with a free retro-fit, you will have to look to the dealer who sold the car, personal imports are not covered at all.

In the UK only 20 cars are effected, remember the first 15 GTS models were one batch in 97 (I think)!

The parts required are detailed below.

Rack & Pinion Mounting Bracket repair & reinforcement kit is #050188Z0AA

in picture (contents of kit)
(1) Bracket-Rack & Pinion Mounting #05018819AA
(2)Reinforcements rack & pinion #050175Z4AA (right side)
#050175Z5AA (left side)

If any of you feel hard done by then let me know and I will bounce it back to Detroit via the VCA.

No US Viper Technicians are coming to do the job,the guy I spoke too seems to have an endless supply of people with engineering degrees to do the job and he may be despatched throughout the country to do the mods if the individual dealer is incapable.

You can also check yourself by looking at the rack see this post

and just weld up the other side of your rack brackets

If it was me, I'd trust my gut instinct and not let some spotty oily oik any where near my car. Trust somebody that is recommended to do the work- at the end of the day, it's your car, and more importantly, your life that could potentially be at risk. Can you pay for the kit, collect it and wait until a suitable source of labour (labor!) is found?.......maybe contact Mr. Hazzard could be a good start?????????
Just my opinion though- not worth the paper it's written on.........oh yeah, no paper!
Maybe I should get my car on the road b4 I start thinking about recalls! Keep us all posted on what happens, please.

Tom,

Did you see the post regarding the new bolts etc for the axle, I know that you are a bit slow but your misses is a fast lady!

I may just ask Jon B for the new bolts etc and do a club purchase...........any takers?
