Got taken out in Eann Whalley's Chimaera yesterday at the BNG 2012 meet, got to say it was AWESOME!
The acceleration of his chimaera took my breath away!
Though reading this post I would have to point out the kit price I was quoted yesterday is £3300.
As I understand it Track V Road are doing an install so it will be interesting to see what they charge.
How was the sound of it?? Was it muted like many turbo cars? No turbolag??

Want!

Yes it is awesome, and without doubt the biggest step forward in the development of our cars since the SC Power Rotrex super charger kit.

In cost terms & power gains it also has the potential to knock the SC kit into a cocked hat, so in my opinion it's well worth getting the engine management system right & not being too greedy with boost to ensure a nice drivable package.

I was definitely quoted £2,450 for the complete kit with intercooler.

This was based on the fact I have a Canems engine management system & 250cc pintle injectors already.

If I want to add 8 larger injectors and an oil cooler the kit would be £2,950.

At a modest 9psi of boost Eann's turbo kit has delivered a proven 45% increase in HP, & even bigger percentage torque gains yikes

As such the turbo kit has to represent the best power increase for your money, by some margin.

But perhaps only if you have already invested in an Emerald, MegaSquirt, Canems ect; saying that Eann has achieved the 45% gain while still running the distributor & his adapted 14CUX.

That's just remarkable, it's also evidence of the skills & knowledge that exists behind the development of the turbo kit.

Take my Canems equipped 4.0 litre making 260hp at the crank, add the turbo kit with a nice safe & modest 9psi of boost, and instantly it's making 377hp at the crank!!!

That's a potential of 320hp at the wheels for £2,450 plus fitting and mapping.

To get the same kind of power increase the only other options I can see are:

1: Fit an LS3 = £10,000 plus

2: Have a very special 5 litre plus RV8 built = £6,000 plus

3: Fit a SC-Power supercharger kit = £5,000 plus

My ultimate targets are 300hp at the wheels on LPG (cost equivalent of 48mpg at 80mph) with a 260 mile LPG range while retaining the touring luggage capacity and still being able to store the roof in the boot.

As ambitious as these targets may sound, I'm actually very confident it's all very realistic.

With the help of my very clever friends at Lloyd Specialist Developments wink

This is definitely a very interesting development.

I'm still pondering what to use to power my Rangie build.

The RV8 is easiest but the LS3 gives the power target I want plus being more modern it is more efficient than an RV8. It'll deliver 20+ mpg when cruising.

I looked at using SC to get a RV8 up to the required power levels but to be perfectly honest when I spoke to a few people who had fitted the various options out there I came away with the distinct impression that they weren't much kop and had proven a bit problematic for anyone not willing or able to wield spanners on a regular basis.

I like the turbo concept because with a good management system you can just run a series of power settings so you can switch down the boost when cruising.

Not sure an RV8 will ever show economy to match the LS and as Rangies have quite small tanks constantly filling up on long journeys is a pain.

Any thoughts on what would be the most rewarding block to use though? A 4.6?

Definitely no turbo lag. The engine was silky smooth at tick over and when we came back through the car park from the test flight wink the engine was crawling along at just 850rpm in 5th with no concerns. the RV8 sound pretty much dominates any sound from the turbo though you are aware that a turbo is fitted imho, to be honest most of my attention was on the awesome rate of acceleration during the ride cool

Aside from the turbo, Eann's car also had a megasquirt fitted, one of his plenum kits and improved braking (ford scorpio setup)

Ok, that's interesting, so he's gone MegaSquirt now then scratchchin

He did say he was heading in this direction when I spoke to him a month or so ago.

It seems pretty clear that an engine management system with boost control and mappable ignition is going to offer a massive head start for anyone thinking about a turbo or supercharger conversion.

As more cars get converted I'm in no doubt the turbo kit will be proven as an unbeatable HP improver for your money.

Eann did offer me a ride at the BNG but sadly I couldn't make it, I'm very much looking forward to my test flight soon woohoo

LPG & Turbos, I think it should work?

Let me start you off gently with a weedy six cylinders;

Moving up two cylinders here's Charlie Inglis's LPG fed, single turbo V8 making over 700rwhp

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOdwJrTijCk

Or how about a Twin Turbo SBC sucking LPG?

Finally Ford LTD turbo on LPG running a Haltech ECU & good old MSD ignition.

All sporting Turbos, all breathing LPG.

I think that proves the concept wink

That makes a lot of a lot of sense, I really could not fathom how you would get the fueling accurate by altering the AFM output and fuel pressure alone on the 14CUX, its just too crude.
