It's well worth noting, which seems to be over looked on a lot of threads on tyres... is that you're driving a light weight sports car, and what works on metalic german barge/french hot hatch does not work the same on a TVR...

having run Toyo's T1S,T1R, currently R1R and Kumho V70A (track day tyres)... I can say in the summer nothing beats the Kumho (in my experience), however add some rain and lower the temp the Toyo RIR is def the best, also good in the summer (just missing that edge BUT, when it rains way superior add another 40mph safely)

How much wider do these road legal track day tyres come ? problem is even if i can get the right sizes they may not fit under the arch .So what tyres fit to 16/17 inch setup without being far out with diameters

Are the Yokohama ADVAN Neova AD08 a road legal track day tyre or a fast road tyre .The weird thing is when i look at the Euro rating for braking in wet conditions it shows an "A" but the reviews say they are poor in wet conditions .

It`s all a bit confusing .confused

What makes it even more confusing some of the trackday tyres come in three compounds ,which ones would i go for ?

Camskill don't list the R1R in 205/55/15, so I assume they're not available in that size.

Where did you guys buy these? They're particularly interesting because not only are they available at the right size, they're also available in a W rating. But I can't find anywhere that sells them are they quite new?

Edited to add: just seen the "find a dealer"link, which shows a place in Woking and several in Guildford. I'll try ringing around. Thanks!

I posted this on another tyre thread recently...Toyo R1-R's

205/55/R15 gives around 606mm diameter. So with 16" imolas all round you can run 205/50/R16 (manual steering) or 225/45/R16 (PAS steering) on the front and keep close to rolling diameter of original.

The AD08 are a full road tyre. Not track/road legal.

So how good are the AD08`s ? are they softer then the T1R`s ..It does say that the tyres should never go lower than 14 degrees C even in the garage ,it will damage the tyre .

I've been running these for the last year or so:
Kumho KU31 Ecsta Sport - £56.40

I have to say, at the time I was a little dubious, having heard some things about soft sidewalls, and looking at the price of them.

But i thought I'd give them a punt, and I have to say, they are a hell of a lot of tyre for the money. Ok, they're not spectacular in the wet, but I have used more expensive tyres that have performed a lot worse Dunlop SP's for example spring to mind.

Thing is, considering how light the chim is, I don't think the soft sidewall problem is an issue, I really don't notice it anyway.

If you fancy a punt, considering you'll get 4 for under £230, you can go too far wrong, and will likely be pleasently suprised!

Hi Hoover,
Are you saying you've compared Toyo T1R and R1R and found the R1R to be better in dry and wet conditions ? I have had a couple of sets of T1Rs and found them to be great. Previously had S02s and SO3s and found them to be frightening in standing water on the motorway (even in a straight line) and could let go real suddenly in the wet on corners even with moderate throttle.
Would be very interested in hearing of a tyre that will fit standard 15" and 16" and is better all rounder than T1Rs.

A little bit of a summary from my reasonable experience:

Toyo T1-R
This is an ok allround tyre. Very good in the wet and superb in standing water. However, it has considerable sidewall flex causing dullness in handling and instability under heavy braking. A spirited dry trackday will melt the tread blocks as it overheats too easily.

Toyo R1-R
Much softer compound than the T1-R with much more stable tread blocks and stiffer side walls. Good in the wet, very good in the dry. A superb all round tyre. Wears more quickly than some.

Toyo 888's
A medium compound road legal track tyre. Outstanding dry grip, good wet grip when pressing on. Not good at all with standing water. Very capable tyre on track and fast road driving. Much more grip than the above tyres.

Yokohamma AD08
Stiff sidewalls giving good handling feel and good control under braking. Good wet, good dry. Lasts longer than the R1-R's but has slightly less grip in the dry. A very good allround tyre.

This experience is on an 830kg elise and 1000kg lotus Europa.

At the end of the day it really depends on your driving style and the demands you put on the tyres.

Unfortunately there really isn't much choice out there for 15" rims with TVR sizes any more. Manufacturers just dont support this market. If you want tyre choice, you have to either get another set of rear 16" rims on the front. Or go aftermarket with 17"/17" or 17"/18"
The 15" tyres that are available may not be the latest designs/technology.
Also, remeber that tyres over 4 years old should really be binned!! The rubber compound hardens and loses its ability to grip properly.

So the ADO8`s are softer than the T1R and almost a trackday tyre ! Do they come with at least 8mm of tread ,and come at the same size as the road tyres (I know the trackday tyres come wider and much larger diameter).

The biggest differences to a T1-R are a better compound, stiffer sidewall and no wobbly tread blocks. AD08's are a road tyre. 7-8mm, check the website. All tyres are a compromise.

Strewth, know exactly what you mean. That end of the course made me very nervous on not very good tyres, since dumped.

Daz, and anyone else for that matter, do you fancy coming over to West Norfolk for an airfield track session 20/21April? Whole track weekend, or either day, £60 a full day, open pit lane. It's at RAF Marham, which is 10 miles south of Kings Lynn and about 95 miles from you. I can offer space to camp overnight, a locked compound for the cars, plus evening barbecue etc for all TVR drivers, about 10 miles from the venue. Just put Marhamtrackday.co.uk into the www machine if you want to know more....

I really don't know how booked up it will get. Last August only about 30 came. Capacity is 60 I think. On a number of laps I was the only car on track! I will check with the organisers and see what they say.
