Hello all,

Spent 4 hours on Sunday debugging my intermittent passenger window issue on the Chim. Had already traced the fault to an issue between the switch and the inner loom, so took the top dash off (too much time upside down in the footwells was not pleasant!)

My car has a newer alarm (AutoWatch 160 Rli/T) which has window closure, so my suspicions were that the window closure module was causing the very high resistance in one of the window wires.
Having lifted the dash, and the centre bulkhead, I can see that 4 of the original switch wires on each switch have been cut and run up under the dash. The cut/solder job has been covered with heat-shrink, rather than the black tape (!!) which covers the alarm wire-up, making me think that this was done at a different time.

Cutting to the chase, the wires all run up under the dash to a sealed black box, about the size of a cigarette box, marked with the words:
281 Ranger

The only other markings are a MFG date in 1993 - making me think this was something fitted at the factory. Does anyone else have one of these under the dash, and is it just a window closure module?
If I can find some idea of wiring diags, I can replace it - otherwise I might split it open and see if it can be repaired.

Can't help wit that module but if there is a grey wire coming from the alarm to it then it ought to be easy enough to replace with any "generic" window closure module.

looking at the diagram for your alarm:

The alarm triggers a negaitve for 45 seconds to activate a window closure module so pretty much any aftermarket one should be fine, eBay has lots listed.

Apologies for the unexpected thread resurrection, but I'd like to thank you for the help.

The thread is just the answer I'm looking for as I'm unpick the mess of various alarm installs on my newly acquired Mercedes 190. I saw 2 of these modules on under the passenger carpet with half the wiring disappearing into the centre console. It was a little concerning what they were doing and how deeply embedded into the car they were

I had selected UK search only but found this on Italian ebay a bit later (oddly with a useful English bit midway):

Universal window module

Compatibility : ranger 759-739-758-738-734-727 .

The model glass-raiser 281 operates only in connection with the alarms activeted with remote control.
It allows to obtain the automatic closing of 2 windows instantaneously every time you switch the alarm on.
It is equipped with a special system which disconnects the feeding of the glass-raiser motor when the glass comes to the last stage .
If you wish to have the closing of more than 2 windows instantaneously , it would be necessary to connect another model 281
