I’ve received the composite gasket from eBay, but it doesn’t look very thick or wide. Especially where the bolt holes are, there’s barely any gasket material there at all. Should I just stick this on with hlyomar smeared on both sides of the gasket or something better? Is hylomar ok with oil? An engineer at work says not to use hylomar as it’s not for use with oil, I need a proper oil sealant.

Hylomar make many different products, Hylosil 300 is the best for the sump if you just want to use sealant IMHO.

Torque settings for the bolts?

I've read 8lb ft for the main bolts, 15lb ft for the two rear bolts. Is that correct?

Edit: Another resource says around 23Nm, so that seems about right.

I used a very thin smear of Hylomar blue on both sides. To much and it will squeeze out the sides when tightened and block the oil pick-up. Just tighten the bolts so they are tight. I used some Loctite on the threads to prevent them working loose.

I doesn't have to be too complicated! wink

Yep, all done with the gasket, blue hylomar and thread lock. Seems to have gone well enough!

Gasket and hylomar

Strengthening plate

PS. I didn't have any stud bar, so I used some pencils threaded into the holes in the block to guide the sump and gasket up. Seemed to work fine and they were easily removed once I had a few of the bolts in.

I've just pinched it up for now, as I wanted to leave it 24 hours for the hylomar to set. I'll tighten it up tonight, get it off the axle stands and then it's on to changing the coolant hoses, power steering hoses, induction hoses, plenum trumpets, thermal gasket and valley gasket! Lots to do!

Sorry for hijacking this thread BTW.

You need to apply the sealant bead around the inner of the bolt holes, then a dab round the outside.

I prefer to use a wider nozzle (or no nozzle just the tube) and lay a flatter / more even bead then scrape off the excess at the edge with a pallet knife or the like.

Didn't want to run it round the inside in case it squeezed out into the sump. I did spread it out evenly though. The gasket seems decent enough anyway.

Old thread this but for those thinking whether to use a gasket or just a good Silicon, (Wynns black gasket maker).

Took these while under the car today.

Hasn't done more then 1500 miles but mapped once on a RR and separately RRed so lots of full power revs, .....dry as a bone.

Pete , got a pic of the front of the sump ? Would be handy, got my new mulfab sump ready to go one, did you have to wash it before fitting ?

I'll try and take one tomorrow.

Yes, I cleaned the sump.

Used paint thinners to thoroughly clean all surfaces before using the RTV. Tightened loosely, left it overnight and re tightened firmly but not too tightly.

Did you pressure wash the sump out before fitting it, did you use any thread sealant on the bolts ? Cheers

Just washed it with a good soapy water mix and rinsed.

I put a bit of the silicon on the front two bolts and no thread lock.

As Peter says. I used Loctite 5980. Thoroughly cleaned sump and block with white spirit, then thinners to remove grease. Used the silicone to seal the front and rear two bolts. Did the job. Unfortunately, had to get it removed again for some work, but it took a good 5 mins with a rubber mallet and pry bar to get it off! Dan Taylor used silicone with a cork gasket. That's worked too.
