Thanks Anthony a very generous offer, I don't know if I'm brave enough to take the wheel but I would definitely be up for a passenger ride.
You would be surprised. It will have 3 maps, selected on a switch in the car, and Macdeb's recent thread lists exactly what I had decided for my map selection:

Pussy mode, boost limited to about 3psi, for general road driving
Mid-boost mode, for fart road/twisty track mode, limited to 8 psi
Balls out mode, full 14 psi, for tracks with long straights.

The boost will be programmed only to come on fully in higher gears, to avoid second gear hedge moments.

I already have it at about 4 psi on the 14 CUX. It drives as normal, with some real torque when you want it.

Standard exhaust, fully decated.
Sleeved will only make it more noisy and more drony.... been there

What the cats do is they brake up the soundwaves/pulses a bit. Ideally the decat y-peice should be a muffler, doing the same job...

Alun or anyone else. I would love to borrow a sleeved exhaust and try it out as it is the horrible drone at 2000 rpm that stands out head and shoulders above all the rest of the noise!
Hi Peter, you are welcome to sleeve or part sleeve my system currently stored somewhere very close to you and give it a try.

Personally, I think that the drone is the lack of pre-cats. I have had lots of combinations on my two cars and the worst drone is full decat and standard exhaust..

Standard silencer and full cats - no drone and nice but quiet burble on both cars
standard silencer, act y piece and pre-cats - a bit more bark, no drone and slightly louder burble
act cherry bombs, act y piece and pre-cats - proper loud bark, no drone and great noise/burble (around 114 DB at Snetterton from memory)
standard silencer, clive f y piece and no pre-cats - sounds amazing under load, lots of front noise, lots of drone and good burble.

Perhaps the earlier car are better insulated to noise/heat than the later ones? All i know is that on a long-drive at any sort of speed, I cant really listen to music in my current car but could on the early one with the full act system and pre-cats in.

Peter,

Did you remove the foam stuff that sits on top of the fibreglass or did you just stick the dynamat on top?

I see that you put dynaliner on the floor, did you also put the dynamat on the floor and rear shelf too?

Thanks
Jon

Graham. I think I will try your system and see if there is a drone difference.

Know what you mean about GB's wonderful roads. I took my Chimaera to Jools at Chesterfield yesterday. Took 70 minutes in the morning rush hour.

When I got there I reckoned I would have arrived about 3 minutes sooner.......if I had been IN the TVR, not towing it behind my Volvo on its trailer. confused

Hi Ole, do these make a big difference? I can remember one of the main suppliers recommending cones in place of the pre cats when I first got into TVRs but haven't seen anything about them in recent times. Or looked if I am honest!

Cones are essential if, like me, you have a 99 car. Otherwise there is nowhere for the flake to go....jester

Hi Peter

Next project for me is new carpets and your post has convinced me to use insulation as well. Can you tell me which kit you purchased for your install please.

Many thanks

Looking at those cones reminded me of the 50's pattern "Resonator" mufflers that I bought and fitted to my 79 Triumph Bonniville T140E. The std silencers( late American compliant ones) were too long and jutted out past the rear mudguard and were damned heavy. So fitted these "resonators" as fitted to the 1950's and 60's Tigers and Bonnies and they were no only shorter but feather light compared to the std issue ones and looked a darned sight better too IMHO! Had to make up some brackets to mount them and machine a couple of sleeves as the bore was larger on the "resonators" than the std issue ones. Once fitted she ran lean so had to upjet +15 on the Amal Mk11's after that my fuel consumption dropped from an average of 50 mpg to 71.89 mpg.................................. yes I logged and calculated the consumption.

When new I looked in through the holes either end and all that was inside was an angled plate inside the inlet end full of at least 1/4" holes and the outlet had a tripod with a disc welded to the end about 6"-8" away from where the tapered outside met the straight tail pipe. If what was said by old timers in the classic motorcyle world was true then this was to stop Plod being able to poke his trunchion up into the muffler .............................. if he could then that was a ticket for a defective muffler.

The exhaust note was deeper but no harsher and surprisingly no louder ........................ to my untrained ear at least. It seems the angled plate plus the mufflers shape is what quietened the exhaust note down unlike the very heavy std issue silencers which relied upon lots of baffles and wadding that weighed a ton.

Will keep these cone things in mind now in case we need some in the future.

Mine is running around 10psi on a manual boost controller at the moment and its an absolute animal 😂 I will have to go to a programmable boost controller at some point
