Successful upgrade?
Discussion
Last winter I took the car off the road to carry out a few upgrades and repairs.
The engine had a complete makeover and that is being run in at the moment.
I stripped everything out of the inside and lined with several layers of heat and sound insulation.
After driving the car as my daily for the last week I can report that this sound and heat insulation actually works!
After being stuck in Wandsworth one-way system and generally doing a bit of cross town driving the car was much cooler than it was before.
The transmission tunnel was warm but nothing like it was before! So a success story there.
As for the sound insulation, this seems to change the characteristics inside the car.
It is still noisy but different!
There are less rattles and the engine seems to have a muted sound to it.
Now, I can hear all the various whistles from the gaps in between the tops of the doors and the roof et cetera, build quality here is awful! These noises are highlighted as the general noise in the cabin is less.
As for the exhaust, this seems even noisier for some reason! Is this because there is less overall noise in the cabin?
I believe this is the case and therefore the exhaust noise seems more prominent, really in your face!
In conclusion, this was a worthwhile modification but the downside is the constant exhaust drone which is really getting on my nerves.
How anyone would use one of these cars as a daily is beyond me.
The roads in the south-east here are terrible which really highlights stiffer suspension and low profile tyres, (not just my car but any cars with sporting credentials). No wonder I am happy driving my old ML most of the time.
Driving the chim, "with spirit "Is what it is all about and I can forgive the levels of noise during these periods but otherwise I could be tempted by something more user friendly, (shock horror!), but what, there isn't a huge amount af performance alternatives on offer
Don't get me wrong, there is hardly anything that will stick with this down fast country lanes and B roads, it really is phenomenal but......................

A one off Bob.
A friend had it made for his cerb but never fitted it. I modified it to fit the chim.
I'm guessing you got it from Anthony (Precat), if so technically its one of two. My brother has the other on his cerb. A friend had it made for his cerb but never fitted it. I modified it to fit the chim.
Alan that makes them still has the moulds, I believe he charges £300-400 for carbon. The mould is for a cerbera though which a wider than a chim so will need modifying.
Phazed, can you remember how much as involved to get it to fit on a chim? Did you have to cut a section of of the middle?
Regards the noise. De Catt pipes + the Maniflods that once had pre cats ramming all that fast air into standard silencer and over loading it,,, I imagine gases going into it and bouncing around as it's travelling faster and can't get down the tailpipes so creates a dull din at 2000 revs, faster engine speeds I think they just go through faster and not so much into the box so the din dissipates and becomes less intrusive in the cab. Fully sleeved exhaust this noise is totally gone and it's a higher pitched sound ( within the car) and not as loud, behind the car it's insanely loud but behind and gone. Overall my car was quieter with standard Y and fully sleeved exhaust ( inside the car ) but was louder overall!
I'm thinking of putting fully sleeved exhaust on if I have a run at Shaky just to make st loads of noise, and it might give me a tenth with Clive's Y so fully de cat and sleeved exhaust, be a laugh if nothing else,, then consider those silencer inserts you can get for the tail pipes, if my theory has any traction it's that I'll no longer have the drone underneath me and the inserts can make it reasonable for road use.
What I will say is Catted with sleeved exhaust other than tickover sounds fantastic when on the pipe and the best for inside the car for noise suppression.

Very nice Job Peter was there any issues with the slightly different sizes when refitting the carpets.
Interesting information on the exhaust drone it's one of my little bugbears with the car I think a certain accountant's views would be helpful, could be another reason to go turbo. : thumbup:

No real issues at all.
The centre console ends up being a tad higher but doesn't necessitate anything other than letting off the handbrake cable so it comes up another click or so.
I put several layers on the inside of the pedal box but had to remove some as I couldn't depress the clutch fully

Ole, turbo my car, are you mad!
Alun or anyone else. I would love to borrow a sleeved exhaust and try it out as it is the horrible drone at 2000 rpm that stands out head and shoulders above all the rest of the noise!
I'll pop it on my car for Shaky, bring your standard one and we can swap, I'll try your standard one,, if it's better than my standard one,, you can have that one back Alun or anyone else. You better mark it so we know which is which
Maybe if I put the sleeved on mine now it's fully de cat you might know instantly if it's a goer or not have a drive of it at Shaky. I'm assuming it will be obnoctiously loud but fantastic for drag racing. It's really wether or not some insert mufflers will work with it because on it's own it's likely to be 115 db!

Moi? The turbo definitely muffles the exhaust note a tad. My car is decatted with a standard exhaust, and should now be nicely within track day noise limits. Car still isn't exactly what you would call quiet.Interesting information on the exhaust drone it's one of my little bugbears with the car I think a certain accountant's views would be helpful, could be another reason to go turbo. : thumbup:
I know Peter (and his car) are both fully decatted - he's more of a dog person. What exhaust are you running, Peter? Standard? Your car has always been well under most track day noise limits IIRC.
NIce job with the insulation
Trev, you are welcome to drive my car as soon as it's back from Chesterfield.
