Front calipers piston position

I have just rebuilt and fitted the front calipers but I see the piston does not fully sit behind the pads, I can't see that I have rebuilt it incorrectly but I just assumed the piston would be fully behind the pads, it's on a 95 500, could anyone please confirm if this is right or wrong?
