Thanks, will check the tank out as well before it goes back on the road for summer. Gauge tends to stick, either due to tank flexing and jamming it - or maybe something broke inside?

Why would anyone buy a Leven fuel cap ? Its not on the outside of the car so you can`t admire it ! just seems a waste of time .
I've got one and it's lovely. I do take your point though that you don't see it that often. But it still looks nice.....

For what it's worth when I fitted my new ECU I removed the carbon canister altogether. Most aftermarket ECUs including the Megasquirt Plug and Play don't control the valve on the canister as the 14CUX does. The exception to this is the MBE system sold by TVR Power. I removed mine, and fitted a breather filter to the hose from the fuel tank, removed the one way valve in the trumpet base and replaced with a 5/16 or 5/8 UNF (memory failing) screw and blanked the hole in the inner wing the hose fed through after removing the hose from the car. Problem permanently solved.

You could say the same about any "dress up" part in the engine bay too. "Horses for courses" is the answer, if we were all the same the world would be very dull...

It's the things you can't see that count.
[I've got one, but you expected that] hehe

Received a few emails over the weekend from Pistonheads saying a reply had added to my post.
Seemed odd as I hadn't posted anything recently.

Just checked out the dates on this one and it was almost 8 years ago !
No wonder I didn't rememeber.

My fault P400PLS - I saw the topic "popping fuel tank" which was exactly my problem and breathed some new life into this thread. You never know when something will come in handy! Good to see so much rapid feedback....

Hi,
I think that one of the baffles in my fuel tank has broken off as I can hear something clonking when I go over a bump / pot hole. Also getting popping from tank. Does anyone know how to confirm my suspicions?
Is the cure a new tank or is there another option?

FACT 1 - To meet Type Approval no fuel system is allowed to vent to atmosphere.
FACT 2 - The TVR original cap does not have a vent hole.
FACT 3 - The system when operating correctly collects the fuel vapour in the 'carbon canister'. When the car is started a valve opens which purges the canister and allows the vapour into the engine and is burnt off.
FACT 4 - When the cainister or pipe work becomes blocked the fuel pump will create a vacuum. Opening the fuel filler cap releases this with the 'hiss' and/or 'bong'of the tank returning to normal.

The Leven cap, as per the TVR original does not have a vent hole and so is not a bad design. The problem is with the car not the cap!
Iv`e never understood why you would want a fancy petrol filler cap when you can`t even see it rolleyes

The existing tank can be cut open, baffle welded and then the tank welded back together. A good engineering shop can help you.
