Good evening gents
Going emreld soon with jools looking at coil packs and engine bay neatness has anyone had
Problems with the RR packs that mount at the back of the plenom?
Was looking at the msd packs but there a load of cash to get them over here
ive got Bosch coil packs and they works fine. good quality installed by Eann, Joolz mapped my car and commented on the quality of them at the time.Going emreld soon with jools looking at coil packs and engine bay neatness has anyone had

I have mine fitted at the side of the plenhum for ease of access to leads, but they could fit at the back as they are pretty compact.
I could make a neater bracket and mount them facing each other on a vertical plate .

Nope.
Best solution or at least the tidiest. If they work on landies, they’ll work on yours that lives in the garage I’ve washed my car every week for 2 odd years when using the car daily and I used a lot of water. Easy to get replaced etc I even use the hose to wash off my stainless mesh and it’s alwys fired up instantly winter or summer.
Do you wanna see a pic :hehe,,,, well here’s one anyway
You can’t see them anyway
It’s a fit and forget and I expect them to last 10 years maybe.
The ones that fit in between the front of the plenum and exhaust look st if you ask me. This is just lovely jubbly

I'm going off the packs that mount around the side / front of the plenom with the power steering Rez will need moving Best solution or at least the tidiest. So it's to the rear with them as long as they fit with my new stepper

Yes it’s after I fitted an Ipso oil pressure sender and wanted to be sure of the readings on the cars gauge.
I reckon behind the engine they get less heat effected. That pic is before I used some cheap dividers so they are now neater.
If they do the job as they are meant to were talking 50,000 miles of use. Hiding them away seems like a good idea to me.
Obviously if one breaks down or whatever the Plenum has to come off but I’m not expecting that for years if not decades!
The coils are quite low down so your new stepper should fit easily enough. Can’t Joolz do this without a stepper, fkings things are st and pointless on these engines.

^^^^^^^ ok the wording is a bit strong but I just don’t think it’s the best place for them for heat reasons. Each to there own. I like mine tucked away so shows an un cluttered engine bay. if they are reliable as expected I just don’t see the point of having them in view.
Mbe easily the neatest solution when it comes to after market Ecu by some way, just look at the wiring harness

Hi Alun
Yes I have different positions on my wiring loom pin board for position o coil packs depending on the spec of the engine bay. I use rear of plenum, side of plenum or where the Dizzy normally goes depending on what I feel is best. For some time I used the ex-dizzy position with cerbera coil packs because pretty much every tvr garage will have those in stock so ease of replacement is great.
However I agree the stealthy loom of behind plenum is neater, and is my default coils position for my cheap entry level package. I would only change that position if there was good reason now .. but sometimes enlarged plenums or aftermarket kit fitted in the engine bay means you can't fit the OE landrover coils. Eg I recently did a turbo car with a larger adjustable aftermarket fuel regulator so I fitted the coils on top of the offside rocker cover.
The supercharged cars have the plenums the other way around so you need to factor in a lengthened throttle position sensor wire etc etc
My modular style pin board and making my own looms and also occasionally HT leads in house means I can alter the layout to suit what's best, or suit what the customer prefers also.
I also do installs with no stepper if the customer so wishes, but I consider there are very good reasons for running with one (in fact every major manufacturer uses some way to increase airflow on cold starts too, I don't suppose they're all wrong .. ) , but if the customer is set on not having one then that's fine.

The RR style bank of four coils like Alun & Peter use do get a fair bit of criticism in the trade but thats unjustified IME neither Classic Chim or Phazed have had issues using them and most RR ign faults are HT lead related IMO not coils , those VAG coils that Sapper uses have a similar track record the beauty of those is they are logic coils (built in ign module) I intend to use these on my Megasquirt ECU revision this winter (MS2 to MS3) not as neat as behind the plenum but being logic coils takes away all the potential coil switching duties and electrical noise away from the ECU electronics

Very true boys. I’m not aiming on touching the coil pack end of the leads as I don’t see any point in disturbing them,,, I suppose if I somehow burn or have a faulty lead it will be a bit harder to replace but I’m sure I can get my hand in there to do it without removing Plenum but that’s not exactly a hard job anyway.
It’s all just splitting hairs really. I still think there’s a lot less heat behind the engine and air travels past and out that way anyway.
If they work, provide a big fat spark who flipping cares really.
I really didn’t like the idea of grey leads but soon as it was done I agreed with Dom, it gives a vintage kinda look which is über cool and subtle in one stroke.
Others may disagree. I always liked red ones for instance on all my engines in the past but since the grey ones went in I’ve really come to like it.
Everything about the installation of my after market ( Tvr type approved) Ecu system is the business to me and I’ve not seen a better looking one yet. Tidy as the welsh would say
Other than plug leads you only really see the injector wiring with the totally water proof rubber caps etc. Trigger wheel wire, a few sensor wires all properly professionally sealed as part of the MBE LOOM. It’s obvious to me this loom is inspired by speed boat installations and race car applications which can’t afford water ingress as that kind of failure and loosing a race would be totally unacceptable in this day and age,,, might be money on the line
Thanks for the info Joolz, much appreciated from a busy man like you.
Splitting hairs is daft, all these new Ecu are the dogs,,,, it’s the main reason I struggle to put my car up forsale, it’s as reliable as any car now, that was the point of it for me in the first place. Giving that away seems stupid especially for hsve the price it cost,,, Ive got to start fighting to pay my way again so this unique piece of kit stays in my name ffs!
