So, after a bit longer sabbatical than intended, I think it's time to get mine back in action.

Who is doing good chassis refurb/replace work currently? I've got Sportmotive and Mat Smith in mind to talk to again, but interested if others have come to the fore in the last couple of years...?

Also, anyone know anything about chassis being manufactured in Kimbolton... off forum PM if preferred wink

Mat Smith did mine two years ago and I am very pleased with both the work and the price.

I've been looking at this for a few years now and Sportmotive certainly seem to do a good job, Matt Smith who've I've used for other repairs always does nice work and is a great guy to deal with a proper no BS approach, he offers a body on outrigger replacement option but has also completed full chassis retorations.

In the end I came to the conclusion Southways offer the best full chassis restoration if you're looking for the full monty that will probably last 50 years, however I've just put my Chimaera in with ex Str8Six mechanic Alex Wheatley who offers what is essentially a very cost effective body off outrigger replacement option.

I liked the fact Alex removes the body completely to replace outriggers for more or less what others charge to do the same work with the body left on, with the body removed clearly it also makes sense to address any other areas of corrosion. Finally I'm not a fan of powder coat and Alex uses paint, in the end for me it came down to a ballance between quality, cost, and how many additional years chassis of life I'm buying for the given outlay.

Alex Wheatley got the job because I liked his approach and attitude to the work, the package he proposed is what I consider to be best value, I upgraded to thicker wall seamless tube and supplied Alex with 5 litres Jotamastic 90 Aluminium 2k epoxy mastic which I'm not expecting to give the same smooth finish of powder coat but it will be way longer lasting.

The body on my Chimaera is being lifted this week so time will tell if I've made the right choice.

Hi Gary,
You’ve been to Our Barn before and We are just down the road from Kimbolton but are not aware of anyone making new chassis .
I have My Griff totally stripped down at present if You wanted to have a look at chassis or any other bits
Cheers
Geoff

Thanks for the replies chaps; appreciated.

Good to hear from you Geoff, there's a huge part of me wants to do it myself but need to be sensible given space and time constraints!
