I have just had a fairly new expansion tank fail at the seam

I have also noticed since it's still very clear that there is a significant flow of coolant from one or both of the coolant rail hoses in to the expansion tank when the engine is revved - is that normal?

I'm wondering whether this is related to the failure

Yes the high flow rate is normal, and is the reason i tell people not to touch the two bleed taps on the coolant rails (which can sometimes be problematic sealing properly afterwards) , they self-bleed through the expansion tank perfectly well.

Paul, just read your comments in another thread, ref new coolant tank failing.

Jeez mate you're not having much luck, what happened this time? can you post a pic of where this one failed.

Could it have been a manufacturing defect?

Just asking as I know we have to remove one of the corners.

It failed on the seam at the side that goes along the wing

Full disclosure: I did remove the triangle at the end of the wing side seam nearest the front of the car, this was probably a mistake

I was intending to hold on to it in order to get a £16 refund from EuroCarParts, but I'm not going to bother now since I've just realised that the modification will have nullified the warranty

Anyway trying to claim £16 back for something that has caused consequential losses over 100 times that seems petty to say the least

I will take some photos though

On the plus side, I don't think I have head gasket failure again which was my initial fear

Those replacement tanks are garbage!

Mine didn’t even last long enough to out the car back in the garage after I cleaned it.

Split at the seam.

I’m waiting for Tim at ACT to supply me with an alloy one however the supplier is taking their sweet time!

Thanks, sounds like there was a bad batch, I've decided to carry a spare in the boot

I got one of Ebay a couple of years ago after the original one tool on the appearance of broken toughened glass, still drove home from Spa in it I just had to leave the cap off so as to not pressurize the system.

It lasted a couple of months and then split.

The replacement for that one came from Racetech and has lasted ever since.

Looking at the Audi A100 tank, there seems to be a choice of different manufacturers. I can’t guarantee the parts match as there are variants of the A100. This is for the 1992 quattro 2 litre. https://m.buycarparts.co.uk/audi/100-4a-c4/12482/1...

Well that look correct but it is the material they are made of that is important, around the £20 mark is what I paid for the one that failed after a few months, the Ractetech one is still going strong is more like £50 and worth every penny if it actually lasts which it seems to.

Agree that generally you get what you pay for, used to be that you could count on certain brands but most now outsource their manufacturing.

Hi All

Does anyone know who has, makes or can make an aluminium coolant head tank. I'm sure I've seen them listed but all the usual suspects are NOT coming up trumps frown

Those that have bought the Radtec tank... what is the overflow/ pressure relief set up? Is it in the cap or is it ducted?

Just a quick word of warning.

I ordered one of RadTec's tanks 4 months ago.
Rang them last month to find that it hadn't even been started.
A guy called "DJ" promised to get on the case.
Still haven't heard anything.

I’ve been waiting for mine to be made for months also.

I have bought a allegedly genuine Hella Audi expansion tank for the time being but I’ll update you on the quality when it arrives.

I managed to buy a genuine hella tank off of eBay. Came from abroad.

First impression is you can tell it’s made of a better plastic than what I’ve seen on the market before.

Whether it is a genuine item I don’t know. It’s definitely better than the topran one that most supply ( including TVR part suppliers ) so in my wait for my radtec item. Hopefully this hella item will keep me up and running.

James and Rik (and anyone else interested0

after having given up on RadTec's phone enquiry system, I contacted their FaceBook page and very shortly afterwards was 'Messaged' by Gavin from their Design and Marketing group.
He followed up my query to the extent of getting his arse down to the Fabrication section (where he had worked for 10 years) and making the bloody thing himself.
He then got it prioritised through welding and dispatching and gave me the Tracking Number this morning, before the office was open for business.

I realise that many companies may have been 'hit' by CoVid
BUT
with people like Gavin in employment I really think that British Industry has a chance to make it through the nightmare that their governments have strewn upon them.

Top Marks, Gav thumbup

Oh, and by the by, I told him that tere were others in my position and he said "give 'em my contact !"

Hi Paul

Good news on the Radtec expansion tank front, it seems.

Dare I ask the total cost for your new item as I'm just one other interested in purchasing one from them?

Kind regards
Simon.
