I am looking to source a replacement front grill for my Chim, I have seen some Aluminium ones which I think might look like a nice contrast against the colour of the car. For anyone who has these are they purchased or been fabricated?

Has anyone come up with something entirely different? something more like an Aston or more of a todays type grill?

I need one - but not keen on the original - and i don't want that piece of rubber around the outside to fit it..

Any thoughts?

Why not make a template of the opening shape, and have an outline frame laser cut from stainless steel.

Purchase something like in the link below, as the infill of your grill.

This could easily be welded to the inside of your new frame, and now a one piece stainless framed and stainless mesh grill.

You would have to work around a way of fixing it in place. Cannot help with the last bit as mine is a mk 2 with the different front grill design.

Hi Tom

That’s a good idea I will take a look and see what materials are out there and get something made up.

Hope all going well with yours!

I painted the water bottle black so you lose it from sight.

Is that really the same car as the one in your profile pic. That’s some job you’ve done.

As I have the later nose so I can’t add a grill I painted all the nose cone area inside black so it looks mean rofl
It works a treat.
I think black still looks great especially with that body colour so that’s my only observation.
Stealth and like a black hole,,, deadly,, so though the original looks a bit naff a sharper design grill but still black would be my way of thinking. I’m loving those lights thumbup

That’s looks pucker.
Mine,,, st, I’m still waiting to get garage space and I’m busy anyway.

I have a grands worth of frilly bits sitting here to put on it, about 2/ 3 weeks work and it would be close to being mot standard so a bit frustrated but a side of me says come the dark days of winter I’ll be glad I have the project to think about.

Thanks, I'm really excited by the prospect of getting it on the road. April is my MOT deadline. I need ECU/loom looking at as some of the plugs need replacing at it was a later type engine and loom fitted. So I think it prob worth spending the money on a decent ignition etc.

The outside is nice but I love the inside now tuscan seats trimmed an in.

It will soon come together for you mate - enjoy the completion of your rebuild as hopefully you wont have to do it again!

Role on spring!!!!!

I must say, during these pretty miserable times, the before and after pics of your car really lifted my spirits.

That is one fantastic save/restoration. clap

I can only begin to think of how much work was involved in turning that car around.

Again congrats on a fantastic job.

Thats nice to hear! Yes, I would say for me this is the only good thing to come out of this year!!

I think the best before and after has to go to the interior!

Minus the pink pegs!!!!

That interior looks fantastic, good job!

Back to the subject in hand. In my opinion, anything shiny, silver or bright for a grill turns the car into a bit of an MGB. Black is the only colour to suit the car.

I agree the original grill is a bit crap. If you look at the perforated steel, only about one third are holes so not the best for cooling.

Maybe as suggested, a laser cut grill cut from something a little bit more stylish and efficient, finished in a blank finish.

Thanks Peter!

Agree on the shiny. I was thinking about Anthracite as was toying with the colour of anthracite wheels... perhaps.

But really want to get the design and material bang on - so will look at a few fabricators and see what we can come up with.

Dave, that is EPIC!

I think I said to you before, I nearly bid on that car when it was on evil bay. Now, i am glad I didn't, but what you have done with it is amazing.

I am sure you will have an MOT long before Easter.

Look forward to enjoying it.

One of the very few pictures I have to hand of my old, old chim.

Anything other than black really detracts from the car. Can you imagine shiney!

Just remembered, I fitted new Lupo lights to this years ago.

Hate to say you've gone and spoilt all the previous owners attempts at adding lightness.

Joking aside that looks amazing even without seeing the starting point.

Have used both the standard and made one from SS mesh which is a bit more open to allow better air flow in summer. With the more open grill in some lights the bracing can be seen behind, even when painted out with matt black.

I now seem to have settled with the standard grill in black - if I was going to stay with SS think I would try and match this with SS grill in front of the windscreen and chrome wipers - but then perhaps it would all start to look a bit less butch. All IMHO

Another couple of pics
