I have the 4L 1995 serpentine engine still with the 14CUX.

My inline 6.8k resistors with the spade connectors either side are badly corroded.

Is is ok to simply replace with an inline soldered resistor of any wattage? I can’t see a reason why you’d need to disconnect using the spades.

I’d just clean yours up with some emery cloth, as long as the resistance checks out ok they are pretty robust.
Problem is with standard resistors they are not really up to the job of withstanding the engine bay conditions.

If you get stuck just use a bigger wattage say 5 watts as these will be far more robust when soldered in and with some heat shrink around it

Thanks for the advice. Last night I cleaned them up. One leg was quite corroded so I found a good bit and added some solder to help with making a good contact. Resistance is 6.8 kOhm so job done for now.

I'll bear the higher wattage resistor option in mind as they do have more substantial legs to solder to.

I also tidied up the crimps to my coil as they were on their last legs too.

Finally, gave the stepper a quick blast with solvent and a wipe over. Amazed at how that improved my idle! Previously the car wasn't happy at 900 rpm idle and would hunt and die occasionally. There was nothing obvious on the valve, no oil or grime and last week I could see it operating ok on Rovergauge.

Anyway, running nicely again and a few more connectors tidied up. I must admit it has been a bit of a battle this year fettling rotor caps, HT leads and general electrical gremlins.

I may have 2 spare ones buried in my shed spare box somewhere if you would like them.
Not promising I can find them but will post foc if I can.

One of mine was breaking down when hot and causing the ECU to turn the fuel pump off as it thought the engine had stopped. Soldered a normal 1/4 Watt resistor across it and been fine ever since. It is only to stop back EMF getting to the ECU so wattage is not important.

Same thing happened to me. The engine stalled in town and then would only fire up briefly before immediately dying. Messed around at the side of the road until I worked out the fuel pump wasn't turning on with ignition. Spare fuel pump relay didn't do the trick or an ECU reset. Eventually reseated those resistors (and I guess the engine had cooled down a bit too) and when I turned on the ignition then I could hear the fuel pump whiz into life.

Nursed the car home and found those resistors very corroded.
