Had my Chim for 18 months now and thought it about time I found out what the button on the interior door release should actually do.
Mine does bugger all.

It stops the buttons under the mirrors opening the doors (at least it should)
Do you hear a "thunk" when you press it?

Cheers Craig...

Anyone know where this normally fails? I have the push buttons aft of the door.

On mine (late 95 Chimaera) it central locks the car from the inside (as an anti-hijack safety feature I suppose!)

It does take a few presses sometimes for it to work, then when the locks clunk the button lights up green.

Maybe on yours, the button is worn/knackered, or maybe if you've had an aftermarket alarm fitted it has disabled the button, as some alarms take control of the central locking when the engine is running (my old clifford concept 50 did) as another anti-hijack feature!

It wouldn't surprise me if the alarm were at fault. When I bought the Chim the Alarm activated for no apparent reason. After having it checked by CATS in Farnham (great guys) they found the microwave sensor behind the radio and the boot / bonnet sensors looped back to the alarm.

Mines a 96 4.0 with the big silver buttons behind the doors but without key holes in them. The button on the interior twisty release thingy locks the doors when you press it and lights up green when locked. I think another press unlocks it but I can't remember and its too cold in the garage to go have a look I've spent all day in there fitting a new back door and catflap. Not to the car before any sarky comments.

I have a late 94 and this button should activate central locking. Mine doesn't do anything either so I would be interested in your solution Marlboro. I suspect electrics but haven't investigated, I have upgraded META system which seems to work OK.

Are your doors closing properly? - the button might think they're still open even if they're not - check door strikers etc as per usual...

Yuk!

Have a feel about towards the bottom of the knob (STOP THAT, CARRUTHERS!) and you'll find a grub screw with an Allen key socket. Undo it, take the knob off and you should be able to clean up the central locking button.

Looks like it's jammed in the down position. It should be sprung - Chima, when you get the knob off remember there is a spring under that button somewhere.

Also, can anybody advise when this is supposed to work? i.e. any time, with ignition on, etc.

p.s. - my interior light also does not work at all. I can hear relay click when I depress door switches. Has this anything to do with it?

When your inside the car, you press the button, the doors lock, so they can't be opened from outside (I think it works with the ignition on or off)

I guess its a feature so that if your sitting in a traffic jam, some little git can't come up to your car, open the door, drag you out of it and make away!!

I'll go check in a bit and edit this reply . . . . .

Hi, The way it sorks on mine (Late 95 Chimaera) is that you press the button to activate the central locking (the button then lights up green). Either press the button to turn it off, or turn the knob to turn it off and open the door at the same time.

I have a problem where the button jammed down, and the central locking went crazy and started locking and unlocking the doors continuously!! Pulling the button back up stopped this, but now when pressing the button down it jams and doesn't activate the lock. I think the spring is now jammed down, and possibly the switch under the button is knackered as well. Time to take the knob off!

If the ignition is off, and the button is pressed, it won't light up green but when you shut the door it is locked automatically, without having to use the remote plipper (useful tip from a fellow PHer). Good for locking the car without setting the alarm. Also good for locking your keys in the car if you aren't careful!!!

My 98 4.0 lights up green when pressed (locked) and pressing again/twisting unlocks.

My door switches in the sills seem to have had too much salt and water recently, seems they're sticking. Accidentally locked the car the other day, luckily window was down. Ignition was off but couldn't unlock with plipper thingy. Had to lean in and twist knob. Door opened but interior light didn't work. Fiddled with door switch and hey presto. Suppose a useful squirt of WD40???? Unless someone knows different....
