Pics of Chimaeras with after-market alloys
Discussion
Hi,
First post, sorry if I am posting in the wrong place!
I have been looking through this thread for inspiration for new wheels for my (new to me) Chimaera 400, which currently has some slightly scruffy 500 wheels which are not really to my taste.
The SP12 wheels seem to be a good fit, but the ACT website both says that these are IN stock and OUT of stock.
https://www.actproducts.co.uk/product/sp12-griffit...
Does anyone know if these are available, or should I just contact them for information?
Is there anywhere else to look for these, or are ACT the source?
Still haven't made up my mind finally, but want to know if they are worth having on a short list.

The SP 12s are a nice set and have the correct offsets for our cars.
They also have the advantage of being seen as almost factory wheels.
They further have the advantage of being sold in 17 inch fronts, 18 inch rears, which gives you the chance to seriously upgrade your front brakes to Brembos or Focus RS brakes. 324mm vs the standard 260 mm. Better braking on the road, essential if you want to do track days.
Finally, there is a greater choice of tyres in 17/18 inch sizes. I have used 215/45 17 fronts and 235/40 18 rears on my car for years now.
They "fill the arches" better (hate that phrase) too.

Thanks, yes, they have a number of upsides. They also have the advantage of being seen as almost factory wheels.

I have e-mailed ACT and asked about availability.
What tyres do you run in those sizes?
I have had Toyo R1Rs most recently on them, good track/road tyre, and Toyo R888s when I used them purely for track days.
For road use I would be looking at Uniroyal Rainsport 3s or 5s. They are downpour-proof.
Not sure what exact sizes are available however.
I have heard good things about, but have not used, Goodyear Eagle F1s, and they do come in those sizes.

Hi again.
How important are the "staggered" wheel dimensions on a Chim?
I am not finding very many wheels which are available in BOTH 17x7 and 18x8 with low ET.
Is running for example 17x7 och 18x7 all round an option, or does this mess up handling?
I am looking at a number of OZ wheels for example.

I need 17 inch wheels at the front on my car due to bigger brakes.
It is presently on 17 inch all round, shod with 215/45 17 fronts and 235/45 17 rears, Uniroyal Rainsport 3s because in the UK the weather is crap 11.75 months of the year.

I also have a set of Silverstone SP12s and have used 215/45 17 fronts and 235/40 18 rears on these..
Honestly? Cannot tell the difference. It handles well on both, and this is mainly down to a good geo set up with a degree of negative front camber.
I don't go too wide, as on my car wider tyres tend to rub.
The car does need the front to rear rake to help the aero, get the front too high and the handling suffers.
Your overall wheel and tyre diameter needs to be about an inch taller at the rear.[url]

Are you running the same width of wheel (7" ?) front and back also, and just different tyres widths?
It can't tell you impact on handling but this site might help check if they'll fit: Will they fit?

With yours as the inspiration, my friend! Although I had to wait and pray that a set of 4x108 Ford fitment turned up, which they did at 3am on eBay (new born baby... what better way to spend the night that trawling eBay ).I usually agree on colour schemes - always preferred the bright and hyper silvers. However, on this car, I must admit, I like the "moody" look... when they are due a refurb, I'll have a mess around in photoshop and see how my mind takes a change.
