My wipers on my 95 Chim work all the time , fine you say ? but mine are wiping even when they are switched off ?!! I have had to unplug the motor under the bonnet to stop them , has anyone had a similer problem is it the switch that is at fault ? Thanks

You must be the only person hoping for rain tomorrow

I would suspect something wrong with the stalk, I assume if you remove the fuse the wipers stop? Do they stop if you switch off the ignition and turn it on again (until the next time you use the wipers?). I think the assembly is from a Cavalier.

I've never heard of this before - most problems are associated with parking/intermittent playing up which is nearly always down to the park switch.

I'd guess there were quite a few things that could cause this problem as there are lots of ways of turning the wipers on.

Intermittent wiper timer can activate it. Wiper parking switch can keep them on. Wash/wipe delay timer can keep them on. And of course the stalk switch you use to control them. Or a relay could have got stuck on. I'd suspect the latter.

I have a very similar problem, But it only occurs when it is wet or very damp.

On my 93 4.0 Chimaera everything is fine until you turn on the wipers. When you put them on intermittant, sometimes they are intermittant sometimes they are just on. I can always switch them to fast and back to on. But sometimes I can't switch them off. If this happens I can switch them off in one of two ways.

First - Time the downward wipe, and switch off the ignition when they hit the park possition. They will usually stay off after that. (obviously this is not usefull or practical whilst driving)

Second - I have found that about two to three seconds of full throtle in second or third gear is enough to get it working correctly again, or at least stop the wipers. (this is the more fun option)

I believe it has to do with the parking mechanism in the wiper motor. I have tried liber applicatioins of WD40 which did improve things. But I am always ready to floor it!

Good luck

Ps if you do replace the wiper motor let us know what you replace it with and the trouble factor.

I had a similar problem with my wipers not parking. Just bought a new park switch (Lucas) and that seem to cure it. Quite simple to fix, just involves removing the wiper motor bracket, spin the motor round so the park switch faces you , and hey presto.!

Can you tell me the LUCAS part number for the park switch, as this is my problem. Had the switch off at the weekend but forgot to take the number.

Thanks

You don't need the Lucas part number, it's much simpler than that. You see there is a network of dealers for TVR and they have stocks of spares specifically for TVRs.

It's amazing I know, but if you just say "I'd like a wiper motor park switch for a Chimaera" they'll know exactly what you want.

'But they rip us off with exhorbitant prices don't they?' you may reply. Not always - I spent more on petrol driving there than it cost - £5.60 from Waldonway in Kent, and they had a stack of them in stock, due to them being a common part to fail.

It took me half an hour to fit. I used a 10mm socket to undo the wiper motor and some grease to try and prevent water getting back in the switch. The switch clips onto the underside of the motor so you'll need a screwdriver to ease the spring clip back in place. Not too tricky really.

When reassembling, use some silicone sealant or grease around the motor mounting studs so that water cannot leak into the passenger footwell and ruin the electrics.

If your wipers are generally running slowly, use Rain-x on the screen and blades to reduce the friction and they should speed up a bit.

Dan

Quick plug for TMS www.tmstvr.co.uk, I've used them before for parts, very helpful and quick service. Will do mail order.

Give them a try

It'll be the park switch corroded cos water gets into it. Mine did it too. Ended up replacing the motor though cos it was all horrible inside the electrical box once I got into it. The way the motor is mounted is not too clever as it gets wet and sits in a puddle all the time.
