This thread has made my mind up to fit the 'ears' but would I be right in thinking that providing that the rear hood part is waterproof then these are not required?

Just to add the elephants ears are there to direct the water from the hoop seal away from the cars interior. The are small but do an important job.

They do deteriorate with rear hood usage but are easy to replace - some are pop riveted on. A lot of cars will probably just have the remains of the tops of them. We have to replace them on a number of cars.

I plan to fit mine this weekend. What glue is everyone planning to use? Might be tricky getting the rubber to stick over the velcro part too - a bit of trimming of the velcro may be in order.
