There is a replacement base / boss kit that is available to fix the coming loose and adjustment problems.

Thanks for the replies both.

Getting access to the boss is very difficult - even after removing the glass and loosening the back plastic section, there is very limited access to the boss
.
I’ll have another go this weekend otherwise a trip to my friendly TVR garage I think!
You don't need to access the boss, just rotate the entire door mirror. The mounting angle is enough to allow the door mirror to rotate 360deg without hitting the window frame. This should allow you to either unscrew the boss with it still attached to the door mirror or if the grub screw is very loose you should be able to ease the turret off the boss.

I feel your pain! I have just spent a week squirting every imaginable release agent on to the boss that is screwed into the door and yesterday it finally came free.
Once you have given up with trying to access the grubscrew the only way out, as said before, is to unwind the complete mirror from the door. However the boss is very likely to be corroded into the bobbin embedded in the doorskin. The only way forward is to lift the black collar out of the way and put a suitable drift or screwdriver down through the tripod and into one of the slots in the boss. Even then you may well have to hit it quite hard. Try to angle the drift so that you are putting rotational force on the boss and not hitting downward. What ever you do don't try to grip the tripod and twist it off as they are not, by design, very strong.
The quick release mirror mount kit is brilliant and you will never have this problem again.
Good luck.

If you can access the grub screw does that allow the mirror assembley to twist round? On mine as I have the seat right back, When the mirror
is adjusted fully outward I still can't see behind me just the side of the door? I've pur one of those blindspot domed mirrors on to get around this for now.

Yes, the boss has a groove all round, the grub screw clamps the tripod (turret) to the boss. You can loosen it then tighten it in a new position

Hi, I have the same problem with a floppy drivers mirror too. It sounds like a recurring problem & a proper faff to sort out, my local specialist struggled to fix it when it went in for service too. So would want to future proof it, does anyone have the link for the quick release mirror mount kit?

As a rough guide to setting the mirror's initial position loosen the grub screw and turn the mirror until the top of the mirror shell is parallel to the ground, then tighten screw. You then have three further positions where you can push the mirror assembly in and out on the internal spring ratchet. Finally fine tune the mirror glass position on the electric control switch.
Fitting the mirror mod will make adjustment very easy, but sorry I don't have a record of the member who supplies the kit.

I have the extended boss kit from Brian G, just need to get the old boss out first.

@bobfather - the problem is that the grub screw is loose so that the mirror rotates but doesnt grip the boss.

I have tried with a flat blade screwdriver but its very difficult to get any rotational force on it.

I'm going to have another go to see if I can get to the grub screw and loosen it so I can pull the mirror off completely, wihcih will give me better access to the boss.

Protect your paintwork around the mirror stem with masking tape. I watched my TVR expert removing my mirror, it took some force

There are slots in the top of the boss, place large flat screwdriver through the tripod and into one of the slots. Now when the tripod rotates it will snag on the screwdriver. Placing a bar through the legs of the tripod you'll now be able to turn the boss with the tripod. Use gentile force only, the tripod isn't robust enough to withstand shock

If the mirror will turn then you should be able to get to the grub screw and release it.
With the mirror off you can get a stilson wrench on the boss as you will be throwing it in the bin.

I'll give it a try as it's very annoying.

I gave up in the end but the guys at Topcats sorted it out for me.
New boss kit fitted so hopefully easier to fix if/when it happens again!

Thanks for all the responses.

Thanks for your help guys. When it happened I took the speaker off and had a feel around only to find there is just fibreglass and a hole. Having got home and checked the bible i can see there is a tork screw so will try that at the weekend. I guess they used a jig at the factory which ment they could set it up before putting on th car....and the door trim would have been off....tried removing that some time ago and gave up ...

Will post any findings when i have a go tomorrow eve......
Does anyone know the size of the tork screw. I can see it with my phone camera. Getting a screwdriver to purchase is slowly driving me insane

No idea what a "tork screw" is but if you mean the little grub screw it takes a 3mm Allen key smile

Thanks Phillpot - I'm one stage away from that at the moment.

I can see a previous owner has had a go at the grubscrew before by hacking at the plastic shielding and shreding paint from the door in the process. Reluctant to make it worse, I'm working on the assumption that I need to remove the entire wing mirror to get to the grub screw.

From inside the door, I followed the cables to the mirror, I can see one of these with my camera:

I assume this is the bolt that holds to mirror tripod to the door. But I'm fiddling around blind and have no idea what size tork driver to use.

There are no Torx screws on the original build. Perhaps a previous owner has attempted to secure a loose mirror by screwing that in to the fitting
