Argh! 5 weeks on and I've cleaned the car (too busy enjoying the wet weather) and the wheels have gorn scuzzy :-( What can I clean the 'corrosion' spots off with? I've got the worst of it with wonder wheels but can I polish the spots off with anything or are the wheels laquered? Ta, -- Mark

I've got the same problem. There are also areas close to the centre where some sort of plastic coating is peeling off. I should get it sorted as apart from the car being constantly dirty it makes it look a bit dejected.

I believe that they are lacquered. I tried polishing one of mine but didn't seem to make much of an improvement. Now resorted to trying to find a replacement wheel.

ted The centre cap laquer peeling was exactly what I had on my S - the rest of the wheel was fine. Once started it just gets worse and worse - got one of those mobile wheel refurb guys round - took all the laquer off and repolished the wheels - looked great !!! All I needed to do was a bit of metal polish onto the wheel I'll look for the number Paul

You should look into geting the wheel refurbished. I was reading an old magazine that tested one of the companies, the wheel looked like new when finished and cost aprox £40. Got to be cheaper that buying a replacement. Remember to clean the inside of the wheel,baked on brake dust can cause corrosion, also when finished give the whole wheel a coat of good quality car wax this will stop the brake dust from sticking. Mark Further to previuos e-mails - if that is my S3 that you bought from Adrian Blyth (1991 H-reg Storm Grey 78,000 miles) I got the wheels refurbed and all the laquer taken off - its just bare metal - so elbow grease +/-metal polish should do the trick. Paul

Paul, Sorry, didn't get any of your emails :-( It sounds like your old car - a picture of it at Adrian's house is on my profile now so you can have a look. If the laquer has been removed then I'll get my metal polish out this weekend and get it shiney again. I'll probably rub some oil on it to protect the metal inbetween cleans. There’s a company in Dartford called Rimtech, they refurbished some MIM alloys for a friend, I fitted the tyres to them after, they are very good, when they were finished the wheels looked like new, and they also did the inside to stop any corrosion causing leaks round the bead. Swifty: The guy works under the name Ultimate Wheels try him on either 0468 972 553 or 07000 783 716 He's mobile (comes out in a dodgy little van) but great bloke - took him about two hours and charged me £120 - that was beginning of last year He's normally advertised in E&M but can't see him in there this week?? Mark: That's my baby in your profile pic.... Traded her in with Adrian for a Griff - you're right about the 11,000 miles - couldn't stop driving her - and got all the niggles sorted. good to know she's gone to a good home and is going to be sprinted - where are you going to go?

I haven't decided yet but I'd like to do as many sprints as I have time to do. I need to get a trailer and a tow bar for the mondeo first so I can get it home if I make a mistake. I'd like to get some adjustable shocks and to replace the bushes with a set from wedge automotive to harden it up a bit for the track. I like the current setup as it gives plenty of warning before slides but I think new bushes would give a better level of feel. All in all it's a great car as I'm sure you know. I'm going to replace all the hoses because I'm paranoid about stuff like that and I'm hoping that some molyslip and some new oil will ease up the gearbox a bit but I'm aware that all old ford units are pretty much the same. Is there anything on the car that in your experience I should keep an eye on? Regards, -- Mark

The only real problem I had with her was the Throttle Position Sensor which was replaced after around 5000 miles of my driving otherwise it was just the usual niggles. Incidently I did have a few overheating problems and David Batty at The Garage in Compton did a bit of a fixit on the rad but suggested that it would need some decent work on it at some point - I think he knows someone who'll take the whole unit out and fix it better than new all the best Hopefully will see you both around Paul

I thought the throttle position sensor looked particularly clean :-) I was testing it because the car broke down and I thought the sensor might be to blame but it was due to the breather pipe from the rocker cover valve collapsing - my fault really, it was kinked so I trimmed it and it subsequently collapsed - doh. I think it kinked because it wasn't routed behind the distributor but it's happy now with its new pipe. I'll keep an eye on the rad, it does look a bit green at the bottom but Mr Batty assures me it's good for a while. I suspect he has used some sort of rad weld in it though as the thermostat now won't close properly so overheating is not a problem at the moment. Like I say I am paranoid about cooling systems so I may get it recored for when I take it on the track though as I'd hate it to explode halfway up gurston down :-) Regards, -- Mark
