Are MGFs rubbish?

My OH needs another car. Budget prob about £1500. She gets a lift to work most days, but sometimes has to drive. Probably 1 day a week. On those days she has a 100 mile round trip, all motorway miles. I know this is probably a completely wrong car for this, but what are MGFs like?

no, wait for all the naysayers to bang on about them being crap.
My GF has an MGTF and has done 50,000 miles (currently on 108k) doing similar to you gf by the sounds of it. She does 40miles each way up and down the M4 in her 2004 MGTF 160. Its had routine stuff like suspension bushes, coolant pipes and a clutch last year.
Nothing has specifically gone wrong apart from the clutch.
Its currently for sale, PM me if your interested?

My parents bought a delivery mileage 1.8 in 1999 and still have it. It's done about 65k miles so isn't typical but until a couple of years ago it needed no work doing to it at all beyond normal wear & tear. Then of course age caught up with it and they spent a four figure sum on radiators and suspensions bits- it's still on its original head gasket though.
I borrowed it for a week for a trip around Cornwall and enjoyed it. It's not going to be as quiet as a hatchback on the motorway but it's reasonably civilised and the hydragas suspension gave it a decent ride without sacrificing handling. The boot in the back isn't huge but it's big enough for my Mum to fit a weekly shop and you don't need to pack light for a weekend away- although I'd recommend squashy bags rather then a suitcase!
£1500 might buy you a decent one but I'd avoid buying the first one you look at. Oh and check the rear window, they're a bugger to replace.

Well I could probably talk her into an mx5, I've never driven either, but I have read that the mx5 is generally recommended on here. In what ways are mx5s better than mgfs?. Serious question, neither car has ever really interested me, but I have the job of researching cars as she is female.

Not driven an MX5, but I know a couple of people who have and they love them. Negatives with the MGF - the driving position is terrible, I'm not a tall person and I couldn't get comfortable in any way, and you sit really high up. I thought the steering felt very weird, just not connected with the car. MPG wise, I think they're about the same. Insurance is about the same. Obviously the MGF has the possible head gasket issue...
My wife has had one for 3 years having just replaced it because she needs 4 seats for work.
Imo its a great car, loads of fun and if you get a good one they're pretty well put together.
Hers has had a head gasket and a new roof, new rear window and tidied up a lot so looks almost new.

No it's not. It's a better car, but not in every way. I'm sure the usual suspect with post up that body stiffness chart.

To be fair, the F does quite a few things better than the MX5. It has better traction, better steering feel (controversial possibly, but I prefer it), a bigger boot, generally more power and crucially is much cheaper for the same aged car. I'm sure the usual suspect with post up that body stiffness chart.
It's just a shame that the build quality is so variable and the driving position is so weird.
