Looking for some advice please.I have an MGA Engine & Box ( in a Grantura )I purchased the car part restored so feeling my way round. When fitting the gear lever do you insert the split brass bush into the selector or fit the bush around the ball on the end of the lever.I,ve tried both ways but once the lever housing is bolted down the lever is solid. To add to the mix the remote has been hacked off and the lever housing welded back on,this gives the appearance more like the MGB box.It is definitely MGA I am wondering if the stop plate should be shimmed. The modification seems to be of long standing so I assume it has worked in the past Thanks in anticipation

Hi,

I have a workshop manual for the MGA and it shows the bush fitting into the selector and looks like it is held in place with a circlip.

Does this help?

Thanks for taking the time to reply. In your manual does it actually state insert the bush into the selector, that would be my best guess however my brother in law thinks it should be fitted around the ball and then inserted into the selector and bolted down.Your thoughts appreciated. Thanks

Hi bazjude,

Unfortunately the manual doesn't describe the sequence for re-assembling the gear lever/bush.

I made the comment because the exploded diagram of the gearbox in the manual shows a circlip on top of the bush. That makes me think the bush is inserted into the 'lever selector' and the circlip put on top to hold it in.

It is a long time since rebuilt my gearbox and can't remember the sequence.

Would a copy of the exploded drawing help?

Can you pm me with your email address?
