Hi there. My '78 BGT died the other other day, whilst driving. Problems started with bad misfire above 3000rpm which got progressively worst down the rev range to the point where the engine died and wouldn't re-start. AA man said there was no spark and suspected distributor cap.

I've gapped and cleaned the points, inspected the dis cap which looked OK and checked all connections etc,. and all seemed to be OK. Still won't start. I've have today ordered a new cap and condenser.

Are the symptoms I've described (gradual decline in performance resulting in engine stopping and won't re-start) consistent with either distributor cap or condenser failure?

Thanks for any assistance. I can do most jobs but seem to fail when it comes to electrics.

Replaced the rotor arm and it fired up. Mystery solved. The smallest component caused all that

Nice cheap easy fix then! I love those. It used to be condensers for me as the quality seemed to have been shocking for a while. Went to electronic ignition and it's been brilliant.

Make sure you replace with a red rotor arm, the black ones are poorly riveted and can fail pretty quick (ex trade, they gave us so many issues)

+1 for suggestion above.
I chased an annoying misfire for ages (after replacing the rotor arm I'd assumed it couldn't possibly be a new part at fault).
New red rotor and no problems since.

Some say its only a matter of time before one graduates from an mgb to a stag - maybe its time ;-)

I have a red rotor arm. Another spare, and spare condenser on order.
I'm back to points as had 2 failures with 'Lumenition' hall effect units, that sat within the dizzy. I see these are no longer available so guess were prone to sudden failures.
