I'm toying with buying an XKR (xkrs or 4.2 or 5.0, either one I don't know yet) with some spare money I found down the back of my sofa last night.

My other options are M3 or AM vantage. I'm thinking about 2006-2009 sort of age.

Similar prices. What I need to think about though is maintenance cost and depreciation.

Any XKR/XKRS owners here who can advise how much in practice I'd need yearly to keep it well maintained? My research suggests £4-800 a year for an annual service. But in practice what is the likelihood of bits needing replacing etc and the average yearly cost of keeping it in good shape?

(I do 5k town miles a year)

And what sort of yearly depreciation are we looking at? I understand they're still going down in value. £2k per year for a £20-25k car?

I've got a 2010 XKR convertible. I've just renewed my extended warrantee which was about a grand, servicing hasn't been an issue, but there are lots of bits that could be very costly if you're unlucky. LadyB8's Merc has just paid for it's extended warranty for the 4 or 5 years we've had it all in one visit to the garage. I think a set of tyres recently cost me 700ish, can't remember the figure, but cheaper that the ones for my classic.
Can't tell you about depreciation but some people on here recently have been saying they are holding up well as if you don't fancy an F-Type (which is a very different sort of car) and want a Jaguar GT then what option do you have. I wasn't planning to sell up, but if someone offered to swap for a nice late XJS V12 I might be tempted biglaugh

If you're only doing 5k town miles a year this isn't the car for you. Expect to see 11-12mpg from a 4.2 XKR in town, maybe one or two more from a 5.0 (direct injection). These all like to stretch their legs though, lots of short/low speed trips tire out batteries which can cause some electrical gremlins.

Servicing costs are very reasonable for what it is, this is partly what swayed me to an XKR away from a V8 Vantage - almost impossible to get out of an AM dealer without a four-figure bill I gather.

Tyres will be from about £850 - £1200 for a full set of half decent stuff or upwards. £2k/year probably about right for depreciation. Generally very reliable, most common things are worn suspension bushes which require the whole wishbone to be changed in some cases, some of the earlier 4.2s had a flaw in the aircon which would leak into the cabin and require the dash to come out to fix. If things like infotainment and satnav are dear to you then you'll be disappointed.

Would I part with mine? Not a chance in hell but make up your own mind.

An XKR is a great buy at the moment. The closest rival, Aston Martin V8 Vantages, seem to be creeping up in value with the cheapest being around £30k for a high mile 2006 model.

The Jaguar warranty is excellent and only around £1000 a year, a major service is £299 with 3+ dealer servicing at Jaguar dealers.

There really isn't much that can match a 5.0 XKR for looks, modernity and performance for under £30k!

I'd say go for the 5.0 2009+ model if your budget allows for it as the facelift made a huge difference in terms of looks and performance.

Having kept an eye on prices i'd say the XKR is creeping up in value too and well priced ones sell very quickly, this seems to be because classic XK prices are also rising and with XK no longer in production, no more will be made!

Also the only other V8 Jaguar coupe is a used F-TYPE R at more than twice the price currently.

XKR values (4.2&5.0) have definitely firmed in the last year and they have depreciated less than my XK. The cars are reliable and fairly cheap to run (bar the 500 quid car tax) if you can avoid main dealers. I regularly see 32mpg out of my standard XK but average 26mpg.

However, these costs pale into insignificance compared with depreciation and the unusually large dealer markup as these cars are hard to shift. At the end of the day these were 60K+ cars when new and although the depreciation is low in percentage terms that still equates to significant amounts of money and neither XK or XKRs have finished yet.

Try and buy privately as sellers will be more desperate. I like to type the cars reg into webuyanycar website to see the approx trade in value and offer a little above that.

A friend has had his immaculate 2008 XKR for sale for nearly 10 months around 20K via a friendly dealer but just got fed up and traded it in for 15K but against another car. The new dealer has it in up at 19K.

I've just had an email from the local JMD with the title "We want your XK" looks like they are actively advertising for stock.

Yes, the old stuff seems a lot better bet than the new over priced and distinctly cheaper feeling Modern Jags. 😢

I was on the Jaguar website and it seems the XK is discontinued.

Must have been too comfortable or didn't look enough like an Audi...
