I am looking to get my partner a "nice" car in the next few months as her Mazda 6 is beginning to fall apart. She likes the space, has no issue driving a larger car, in fact she prefers it, but I'd like to get her something a little more comfortable and with more toys.

We have looked at the usual 3 series, 5 series, newer Mazda 6's, Passats, etc but I've always liked Jags and my Dad has had XJ's for decades that have been lovely cars (although the X300 was much prettier and nicer than the X350!) and the S-Type looks like a relative bargain with the diesel engine.

She does about 20k a year of which 2/3 is motorway and 1/3 city driving so an auto would be nice unless the boxes are crap/failure prone and we're not really worried about a higher mileage car as it'll be worthless and have huge miles on it when we sell it anyway. I would hope a DPF would cope with that kind of driving and my experience of Peugeot diesels which I believe this unit is has been very good, albeit on much older cars. We're used to rattles, my car is a Renault and I'm reasonably hands on with my cars so don't mind twirling the spanners every so often and will always do my own oil/filters/plugs etc myself.

This is the sort of thing I have found just as an example although this one looks suspiciously cheap!

I loved my 2.7D; a lovely ride, quiet and 40mpg. Note that there's a cambelt change at 105K miles which can be the best part of £1,000.

Local Indy up here in Doncaster is £250+vat for a cam belt change, Might be worth checking to see if you've got a local one to service it for you.
Will give you a good idea of servicing costs as well.

Cambelt doesn't worry me - I consider that routine maintenance and with Renault asking for £1200 for the same job on my Megane £300 seems like a massive bargain! Do the diesels have conventional suspension or air? My missus is quite tough on suspension components biglaugh

A genuine 40 mpg sounds excellent though! Oh and whilst this may not seem like a very Jaguarish request do the rear seats fold down?

2007 so 10 years old. Check for rust especially the sills where they seem to suffer. Check the Aircon, S types have issues with the valve failing and damaging the control box and loom failures from the excess current.
Generally bullet proof engine as long as you do the miles to keep the DPF clean.
Bargain but probably priced right to sell.
Yes on my 4.2 the rear seats did fold down , very handy smile

£300? Check that's for a diesel S-Type not petrol; the diesel is much busier under the bonnet so labour costs can be higher.

Better than conventional suspension, they have Jaguar suspension.

I got up to 42mpg on a run and 38-40 average.

Back seats fold down 1/3 and 2/3 giving a load space you can get 6'x4' panels in. Not much height though (as it's a saloon!)

Very helpful, thank you! Had a vague look on Eurocarparts for prices of generic stuff and I suppose the Peugeot engine helps but seems reasonable for consumables too.

Had mine for over 5 years now and absolutely love it. Quiet, wafty, but with well-damped fluid handling. Can be heavy on suspension joints, but bits are cheapish. Mine was remapped by Quantum to about 248bhp and makes a world of difference without unduly affecting consumption - it wafted us down to Italy for the Mille Miglia at an average of 43mpg (at 85mph).

Cambelt + big service on mine came to just over £500 at a local indy. EGR valves will both fail at about 110-120,000 but a proper Jag indy will do them for far less than a non-specialist garage (DAMHIK...). MAFs (2 of them) fail at about the same time but are the same as a Mondeo 2.2 and aren't expensive and easy to do. Gearbox oil needs changing every 75,000 or so, despite what Jaguar say - and don't believe it if you're told it needs special fluid at £16+/litre, it doesn't; I fell for that one too!

Sensitive to tyres, mine's currently on Rainsport 3s and they don't suit the car at all; grip magnificently in the wet, however!

Can't think of anything I'd replace it with currently. smile

These cars suffer severely from corrosion which is concealed by plastic sill covers. This can turn the car into a write off when it still looks superficially quite good. Be careful

^^ On mine it was the wheel arches, especially the OSR at top and front. The rest of the body was fine though.

The 3.0 SE I had before that was all good, so maybe it was just an unlucky chip that spread.
