Hi I have taken delivery of a new f- type which is great

However when I got home I noticed feint scratches on the bodywork in places like someone had cleaned it with a dirty cloth and there was a small scratch about 3 mm wide on one door - not what you would expect from a new car and it looks like it's been cleaned by an amateur

There is also a mark about 10cm wide underneath the gloss paint like a blemish that has been painted over with the lacquer gloss finish so it can't be corrected - looks like a paint defect

The jaguar dealer said they would take it in and get it addressed - I assume they will clean it polish etc and remove the scratches using products I can probably get at home

Dealer is 40 miles away and means they need to collect car and have it for 2 days

Reluctant for someone to take it as I am not sure what will be done to the bodywork to resolve it and I will be without it for 2 days

Anyone got any advice as what I should do - let them collect it and try to fix it / I drop it off to avoid a random driver collecting it and potentially tearing it over a 40 mile journey back to jaguar / try to apply a product that removes the scratches myself ?

Agreed. Could make it worse if you are not sure what you are doing.

Let them have it back.

Arrange a while you wait service.

Thanks so I should just have it detailed independently or let jaguar do it ?

I will prob just drive it back myself and collect when ready - they will provide a courtesy car

They need it for 2 days so not sure while you wait is an option

If they are feint, they're not real, so don't worry about it. smile

Yes. Get it back to the dealer as soon as you can and in the meantime I wouldn't even wash it.

The moment you do any paint correction work yourself or have done by a third party you're providing the garage with a perfect excuse to absolve themselves of responsibility for delivering a car with scratches and you're also running the risk of closing the door on getting any remaining defects repaired.

I bought a new F Type just over a year ago and when I got it home I noticed some roughness in the paint serface so I returned it to the dealer to be rectified. When I got it back it was almost as bad and there were some scratches on the front and one on the rear bumper. I took it back again and spoke to the man who done the work and told him it needed a clay bar, to which he replied "what is a clay bar?" I would imagine that the damage was done at the dealership and would demand that the paint is rectified by a professional detailer.
Don't let this experience put you off though, I have had the car for 15 months and done 7500 miles and it has been perfect.

Standard for JLR dealers IME.

The last time I got a new one, that looked like it had been sanded with an orbital sander, I got them to pay for a proper detail.

How would a clay bar have helped? That just removes contamination from the paint surface pre polish.

Bet he was well chuffed you were telling him how to do his job biggrin

That was the problem, the car was parked next to the railway at the dealership and the paint was contaminated. As for telling him how to do his job he needed telling as he didn't have a clue!

get it professionally detailed

the dealership you bought it from, does just that, sells car ... not professionally clean cars. most outsource that to valeting firms who employee eastern europeans on minimum wage

get it professionally detailed

Yes. A chap I taught myself and now has his own body shop but he's in Witney, Oxfordshire.

If you need details, let me know

If you are talking about swirls and scratchs in the lacquer, then that is how they come. The factory will polish it and use fillers and after a few washes it will look awful. I don't think the dealer will have done a professional 'paint correction' , just used more fillers and polish.....if there is paint defects, then Jag need to sort.

If you want flawless paint, take it to Justin at Exclusive Car Care, www.exclusivecarcare.co.uk for a 'new car detail' will be about £600. Don't wate your money mind you if you are just gping to take it to the local car wash as it will be back to scratched, in no time.....

I've had to have paint done on brand new range rovers before now. Shocking quality control at JLR.

Does the car detail need to be done in a workshop or can a mobile job be done

I have had a quote for someone that will do a 1 stage machine polish and then seal and coat it to get rid of scuffs etc they said it will take 4-5 hours

They are accredited and good reviews on Checkatrade - they said only a ceramic coating would need to be done in a workshop

Does this sound ok ?
