I've just booked up 18 days touring Portugal and started looking at hire cars for the trip.

I thought about going by ferry from the UK but :24 hours on a ferry is just too much for us.

So I thought, what about if shipping the Aston to meet me in Lisbon, and then ship it back at the end. Don't really want the slog through France, and the extra time is not available.

Anyone know a company that can do this safely?

You could start off by getting some quotes from https://www.shiply.com

Otherwise, this lot could always do it: https://www.carseurope.net (Although I imagine that you’d be paying top, top dollar).

Have you considered shipping the car to bilbao and flying out, driving across the Picos into northern Portugal?

We are flying to Lisbon then doing a circuit round northern Portugal, up into the mountain area then back to the coast .

Booked flights just thinking I'd hire a car, but then got thinking about shipping the Aston

Not great planning I admit

Gang of us just booked for a run in N Spain in April. Plymouth to Santander is under 24hrs, ten of which will be spent sleeping in a cabin and 10 discussing Aston Martins loudly at the bar wink Really looking forward to it as the Picos de Europa should be a fabulous stomping ground for the Astons. Was about £800 return inc a cabin for ref.

Contact either Cars Internatrional or OnTime they are both top professional and charge app 1500 - 2000 pounds if you are a bit flexible with the dates.

That is special Ian - even had a DB5 there. Amazing. Almost as amazing as having a blue V12 Vantage in Ibiza rather than some crappy hire car or borrowing your DJ mates cherished classic Jeep that went on to crack its block due to no water! wink

I've used Kingstown Shipping several times, but I don't think they handle Europe shipping, so probably no good in this instance. Were you considering a container or roll on roll off? I've only shipped from LA to Felixstowe, which is generally ~£1200 for a standard 20ft box. Something across Europe shouldn't be that much though.

One useful thing I learnt early on, was the importance and value of marine insurance. It's not expensive but worth having; I used Towergate Risk Solutions - as a guide, a goods value of $20k came to around £80 to insure, so it's small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.

If you do go the shipping route, I'd recommend giving the corrosion susceptible spots on the Vantage a quick spray of ACF-50 (wing mirror stalks etc). The salt air at sea accelerates corrosion, and supposed air-tight containers, simply aren't.

Any idea of cost ? I'll give them a call, Cars Europe want £2,100 each way plus VAT. I'm sure its a great service but a bit much for a 2 week break...

I am just shipping a car at the moment. Avoid Shiply - they charge you about 300 GBP just for setting up a website.

I am using Hamish at Eurocarmovers UK Scotland <eurocarmoversuk@gmail.com> really great guy and so far I am very pleased with the service. Very friendly, well-organised, keeps me posted on transit (which is now delayed with weather) and he has extensive experience (100% rating on Shiply). He has both covered and open trailers...and works across Europe.

Price from Edinburgh to Brussels is 1200 GBP fully insured on a covered trailer.

Good luck
