I’m at present thinking of buying a Jaguar XK but can’t decide between the coupe or a convertible, is the convertible as good as the coupe, I’m not too bothered about boot space but need the car for most days but not everyday use. Finally what are the pitfalls of XK/XKR ownership please .

The only pitfall of the convertible is less boot space, and both kinds have fairly unusable back seats. If you're OK with that then really it's down to whichever look you prefer - and of course you can't get the roof off a coupe on a nice day. Personally I like the convertible because I prefer the look, which is even better with the roof down. Mine is my daily driver.I've had my 4.2 'vert for over 3 years. The roof works perfectly and is totally waterproof (but a cover is advised or it will start to go green round the edges in prolonged wet weather). I've only had one major issue which proved to be a disintegrated thermostat housing blocking the coolant flow - but that could have happened in a coupe too.
Maybe drive both and see what you think - bearing in mind it's a bit cool now for top-down motoring.
Road tax is top bracket but hey, the Treasury needs you right now. MPG 27-30. Servicing perfectly affordable if you find a good indy.
ETA: another pitfall of the XK is that people will often say 'Wow that's a nice car'. It's tough but we put up with it lol.

I had the pleasure of owning xkr convertiable for 6 yrs uber reliable check usual stuff ie pedestrian sensor system air con drain blocks check passenger football for wet carpets but plenty of advice on forums .buyer guides etc but trust me av a go in the for before you decide to purchase

A few years ago, when my S-Type was starting to get a bit old, I remember idly looking at photos of possible replacements on Autotrader. I looked at X150 and decided it had the best interior of any car. After all that's the bit you see the most. Then I ruled it out as utterly impractical. No room in the back, no boot space, ludicrous road tax. It made no sense whatsoever.
The next year, when I had to find some wheels in only 10 days, I bought one
The fact it's totally impractical and gorgeous, while everybody else has 'sensible' cars they don't like, just makes it better

A friend has a 5.0 XKR convertible for sale. Late model in Italian racing red. Wants about £35k I think. Defiantly the x150 model as the earlier shape doesn’t do it for me, I was going for a convertible as there’s one very close to me, it’s a December 05 XK but it’s got the XKR bonnet fitted which I find odd as the car hasn’t got the supercharger fitted, but the car looks really nice for the price.

Thanks for answering that question. So was the 05 car an x150? I always thought they were made from 06.
Hey nothing wrong with non supercharged cars having bonnet vents. They look great imo.

We deduce 'yes' - though not many to choose from. He's quite defiant about it 
Some XKs will have various XKR features retrofitted - mine came with an XKR gearknob for example - chrome vents are another - but the bonnet louvres are nice. I'd have them if it didn't mean respraying the bonnet...
£35K seems nuts when you can one that's effectively the same for half the price.
OP, I've a 5.0 XKR convertible. You genuinely wouldn't know it had a soft top in normal use. It's so good you kinda forget it is a soft top, until tit monday each spring, then the roof's down and summer fun and posing starts!
Pits falls of ownership. 4 years I've had it, over 100k miles on the clock - no pitfalls yet. No big bills, no expensive failures. It's been an utterly brilliant car, rides beautifully, goes like an absolute beast of you hit the pedal, and I particularly enjoy getting the roof down, selecting dynamic mode and then enjoying the noise of the exhaust, from gentle V8 burble though to hammer and tongs when on full chat.

It's all about the model years. The 2006 model year XK, could well start being built and delivered from the factory at the end of 2005. So long as its the X150, the aluminium bodied XK, and not a late X100. The previous model XKs were good, but that design has roots back well into the 90s. I had one immediately preceding my current XK150. The X150 comprehensively betters the X100 in every area... it's just a much more modern design and assembly process.
