Hello,

I am looking at a Jaguar XF estate (auto, petrol, 18-20 reg) now that I have a child and travel seems more optimistic in the near future.

Just for reference, other vehicles i've had my eye on are the Volvo V90 (& CC) and the Skoda Superb 280. Both are within the same price range, but differ in their offerings.

My understanding is that 2L and 8 speed in the Jag XF is actually quite reliable and there have been no major complaints regarding this iteration.

  • Are there "good to know" things about the car, or stuff to look out for when I view/test drive? Both in terms of maintenance and optional extras?
  • A late '18 reg, early '19 reg car will be fast approaching it's first MOT/major service, is there anything around this time range that should ring alarm bells? (I would expect the dealer to service/stick an MOT on the car prior to sale though).
  • Any advice/experience on ownership?

I have a 2.0 litre petrol Sportbrake which I bought on (my first and probably last) PCP in November 2018. I have done around 22,000 miles so far. Most journeys are sub 15 miles, but also do 100 and 200 mile round trips each fortnight.
No problems or issues. It is not exciting, but does what it is supposed to.
The looks appeal to me. Tech is fine, but I am not a gadget person. My teenage boys are both big fans of the interior/tech.
The 4 cylinder engine and lack of lumbar adjustment in the seats are disappointments for me (should have realised before I bought, of course).
Came from bigger engined cars (this replaced my much loved, but ageing, XJ 4.2 saloon, but I needed an estate), so the lack of noise and torque was felt at first, but you get used to it. Smaller engines (along with hybrid and EV) are the reality going forwards.
I suspect my next car will be a used PHEV, but I could be tempted by an older, larger engined XF estate, too.

No reason to caution against it (is that damning with faint praise?!).

Late 2020 facelift car is a much nicer car interior wise and certainly technology wise

I’ve just bought one from Cazoo and picking it up next week. Mines a December 2018 car in a ‘68 plate. I’m not sure if mine will have Apple car play or not - I think that came in 2019 but mines close to that. 2 litre petrol / 249ps version with 8 speed zf. £18k purchase price with 20k miles on it.

Portfolios are way more affordable then R-Sports and seem to have more options on them - virtually all of them have the Meridian sound system upgrade / rear parking camera that none of the R-Sports really have.

I’d avoid Narvik black as a colour - I have it on my current XE company car that’s shortly going back - you only have to look at it wrong and it gets a scuff on the paint - really soft. And the swirls 🤦‍♂️

I’ve gone for the non metallic white which seem to be the next cheapest after the black - at least with the white it shows up marks a lot less badly.

Portfolios pretty much all have wood inside which is a bit old man (I’m 40 with a dog and a 4 year old so not really old man yet hopefully) - I’m going to de-wood mine I think. Really expensive to try and buy piano black trim pieces so I think I’m going to get mine hydro dipped in piano black. The bit round the gear lever just prises out - the bit round the front of the dash is a bit harder as there’s a bolt hidden under the Jaguar badge in the middle. The door pieces are the worst as you need to remove the door cards to get them off.

I’m coming from a 163ps diesel XE with the 8 speed zf. I’ve read some comments on line that people find the 2’litre petrol is lacking in torque / there’s a lag sometimes - but I think I’m used to that with the XE so I don’t see it as a problem. I think Jaguar have programmed the gearbox software less well then BMW have done with the same box.

For the money I don’t think you can beat the Jag - it’s in that zone where it’s depreciates worse than it’s competitors - I was also considering the superb but I read mixed things about the dsg reliability and actually there’s not much on the market for a sensible price right now. I fancied the 280 4x4 but there’s just 1 red one on autotrader right now and it’s £22 or 23k from memory. Also only half leather interior which seems less practical with young children.

Just my thoughts.

Did you go for Jaguar PCP, why would it be your last ?

I've recently moved to a xf estate sportbrake black edition. Interior is a lovely place to be, stylish, comfy, enough toys to keep you looked after and entertained. Sound system is outstanding (meridian surround, something like 12 speakers, 2 subs, a zillion watts, and genuine dolby/dts etc).

Performance, its clearly not going to keep up with motorbikes or even my previous Exige, but at the same time gives you a suprising kick in the back for a 2 tonne car.

Negatives, had one door locking motor fail, quite common I've since found out. Also noticable lag when booting it out of a junction, but thats just 'learning' the new car, tricky to get the hang of at first at busy junctions when timing is of an essence.

Gorgeous looking though in my opinion, one of the best looking estates

My earlier comment regarding it being my first and last PCP, only related to my attitude to monthly; outgoings and wasn't an issue with the Jaguar PCP scheme. My personal circumstances are such that my monthly income varies dramatically. I would therefore prefer buying an older car with cash to reduce my monthly fixed costs.

Jaguar had a zero % interest rate which I took advantage of. I haven't encountered any issues with the scheme, so it was certainly not intended as a 'warning' for others, just a throwaway comment on my personal attitude.

One other point - MPG is typically around 32-34 mpg for mixed driving. perhaps 36-38mpg for mostly motorway stuff. This isn't hugely better than I got in my V8 XJ (X350) - 28-30 mixed and 34 ish on long runs.

Just bumping this as I picked up this pretty example a few weeks ago:



Its my second XF of his generation. I had one of the first 2016 models as a saloon. Coming back to the model in the sportbrake form is a testament to the decent car it is. The engine still leaves me wondering at times in the 2lt diesel form but on the whole its great and perfect for 95% of daily driving. The air ride at the rear and incontrol pro is a god send.

I feel like I haven't really noticed the air ride with mine other than that it will notify me occasionally on start up that it's set for a light or heavy load etc.

As for incontrol pro, what do you use it for? Other than occasionally checking that I didn't forget to lock it because it doesn't have walkaway locking!

I used to find the rear of the saloon jumped and skipped a little on lanes when pushed. The sportbreak, even given its length, rides nice and soft. You also feel the air ride compensating for body roll in corners to the demise of the rear tyres I guess.

My previous saloon only had the standard small screen InControl. I believe all sportbrakes have the large screens with apple car play. When I bought the 2016 saloon this was InControl Pro on the spec sheet. The sat nav is more interactive than the first models plus the apple play is great too.

Ah cool, so probably more something that you'll notice going from the saloon to the sportbrake.

Got it, I thought you meant the mobile app. I'm using Android Auto for mine - used that in my last few cars and it's basically a mandatory option for me now when looking at cars.
