There is talk of a Jaguar 4X4, if they do make it I hope they make a better job of the styling than Porsche did for the Cayenne!!

The ZT, although I have never driven it, I am sure is a better drive, but normal 75's should be avoided, another bad car from Rover I am afraid. I even tried to confirm this with the JD power survey but the Rover isnt even listed due to lack of vehicles sold.......what does that tell you?

I should re-read JDPower then if I were you, the 75 was 5th overall in it's first appearance.

I recently had a 75 on short term hire whilst my A4 was in the bodyshop. I can't speak for long-term issues, but it was a fine all-rounder, subdued, quiet and far more relaxing at speed than the Audi, dare I say it. Damn good effort, Rover.

Whilst I appreciate that Jaguar has to try and cover as many market segments as possible, I do wish there was something more exciting on the horizon (and I'm not talking X-Type R).

Autocar claim that due to customer clinics, the next XK8/R (not due until 2006!!!) will have a very subdued look. The more progressive design was not liked (I do hope the clinics included the under 60's).

With Ian Callum as styling boss, Jaguar can (and have - R-Coupe, XK180 etc) produce some gorgeous designs that do the company's heritage proud.

It would be nice to think that the profits from dullards like the X-Type estate would be poured into the development of the more exciting models.....but I'm not going to hold my breathe.

At first i wasnt happy wif Jag producing estates and diesels but is that really that bad, Lexus produces a sportcross which is a lifestyle estate so jag are acually goin 2 do it, and anyway this is gonna B a 4wd, luxury estate like an Audi RS4 but a Jag.

Most manufacturers, BMW,AUDI,MERCEDIES have 2 make smaller more useable cars to give ppl a chance 2 enter the brand, once sum 1 is on , their hooked forever.

I think this is perhaps a step in the right direction as this may lead 2 Jag producing other varients of the X-Type , Hopefully the R cos its what BMW have a wide range for the one car.

The SUV has been in the pipeline a long time.

It made the cover of CAR in March 1995 but got selved as the development of the XJR/8 sucked funding away from it.

I've hunted for images on the web, but can't find and frankly can't be arsed to phaff about swanning it in, but the De Lusi concept drawings were very very similar to XsaraVTR's attempt above.

I don't think the wagon is a bad thing for Jag to do but I do have to wonder how ford would justify an SUV as it already also owns Range/LandZRover franchise.

They would have to be very careful to not end up with the nast toe-treading internal-badge-engineering-conflictional goings on that plague VAG so bagly at the moment.

It's better to do one thing well than a lot of things badly.

The secret to brand success is a narrow focus. Jag's should be grace and pace. How many of their models live up to that?

So does that mean that a BMW 316 is really "the ultimate driving machine"...? I think not.

No manufacturer has excellent models throughout the range!! Just look at the BMW Z3 which was a dog! The 3 and 5 series touring cars and of course the 3 series compact!! And they seem to have hired a blind designer as all the new cars are very ugly. Mercedes too have the A class, rubbish, poor quality and ugly and the ML has sub standard interior quality.

This is a new market for Jaguar and they will get it right hopefully, but their first attempt at the compact saloon market is a good one, even though there is improvements to be made to the interior quality to bring it to normal Jaguar standard! But a car is judged on demand and the demand is high and the X-type residuals are slightly higher than the 3 series BM and they retain 20% more of their value after 3 years than a Rover 75 does so that tells you something!

Yes, but then it would cost far more than the competition. This is an ENTRY level Jag... hence, normal rules do not necessarily apply...

Sorry Podie, but Audi seem to be able to have high quality interiors on cars that cost less so I am sure its possible!! My wife owns a Jaguar X-Type 2.5 Sport and I quite like it, its quiet, comfortable on motorways, with the 4 wheel drive its safe and handles very well, but although the interior looks good the materials used could be improved!

Mike - matter of opinion. I've been disgusted with the quality of the interior on my Dad's Audi A3 1.8 T Sport Quattro... switches falling off, rattles and creaks... I think my Escort has less issues....

Agreed Podie, its a matter of taste. A friend has a 2.5 Sport and whilst the interior does look a bit austere (sp?), it looks fine to me.

Of course it is a matter of taste, correct but being the owner of a Jag X-Type, and a lifelong Jaguar fan, I like it better than the competition, I just hope on the next generation or revamp they improve the interior!! The shape looks good IMO so if they improve the interior I think they will have a recognised class leader when at the moment the A4 and 3 series are ranked above it!

Personally I am waiting until the new XJ comes onto the used market next year and pick one up I think they are a great car and a big improvement!

GregE240 How do you like the Boxster, I just sold a 2002 Boxster S and loved its all round ability...enjoying it?

Fair point... they need to continue making progress.
