Yes I was on the dark side because I was in a dealership and didn’t have the angle to get the sunny side, the car on the far side was too close. Anyway don’t panic totally agree with your comment re black roof although there are lots of BMW mini and Range Rover with that combination. I do think the XJC without vinyl needs to be dark in colour or they look odd as to me there is something missing?
I was a vinyl roof lover lol but when you look at various original colour xjc’s the dark colour cars look better because the black vinyl blends in. The lighter colours the roof seems to scream eyesore I’m covered in black vinyl.Edited by Jag53c on Tuesday 17th September 07:38
If you look at restored cars without the vinyl especially the lighter colours, I think the painted roof gives the car a sleeker looker and enhances the 2 door profile nicely.
Now if you compare the modern trend of black roof it is just the top roof panel and doesn’t stretch down the rear b/c pillar like the vinyl on a xjc. I think it’s personal taste nothing wrong nothing right. Maybe purists will want a vinyl roof perhaps? When my car had the vinyl is was good to wipe over if a bird messed on it and less panels to polish ........
I was chatting to the restorer doing my coupe and mentioned your lister with its liberal use of filler and he chuckled and said yep, he restored a red xjs wide body and that was full of filler, expanding foam and generally poor body modification.
Just thinking of colour combos and what about a green/black body colour with the front grill inner finished in a matte dark bronze and the wheel centres with a polished outer edge. The blacked out chrome trim around the headlights and tail lights could also be finished in a dark matte bronze?
RobXJcoupe should the XJC roof have an intermediate support to cross brace the underside of it in picture below or is this how the factory did it originally? The roof will have some heat applied to get its shape back. Got rid of the sunroof roof but have inherited some further roof curve issues to resolve?
Best picture I could find of mine but if you zoom in you will see no additional roof brace. Your roof shouldn’t pop downwards, when originally pressed the curve of the roof gives the panel its strength. If perhaps your replacement roof has been pulled out at the corners to fit to your body you may have lost a bit of its integrity and the heat from welding will do that also as it’s a stressed formed panel. All car roofs are. The metal may also seem flexible as your original roof was full of filler and created a thicker panel. The roof on my car is fine and wouldn’t say it’s any different to a modern car but since removing the vinyl it seems lighter. So what I’ve asked for is to spray the underside of the roof panel in the thicker anti chip paint usually applied to the floor pan. In effect the underside of that panel will have a vinyl covering which thickens the panel and also removes the tinny noise when shutting the doors. Additional dynamat could also be applied for extra sound deadening.
If you feel your roof needs an additional brace by all means fit one but do not weld to the roof skin. It should be welded to the sides of the inner roof panel and the rest should be bonded where it would touch the roof skin on the inside. Any dips or hollows left will need to be finished accordingly.
Hope that helps
Splashed out on a brand new battery tray shelf which arrived today, from Germany believe it or not? At least it is the right colour! XJC people any thought’s on the necessity for the XJ fan battery boxes? I know it limits battery types and sizes and they are a few quid second hand as well for one that is still in need of some restoration.

Above is mine, didn’t take long to smarten up. The fan is something I like as it’s quirky. Not sure how hot the bi metallic strip needs to be to switch the fan on but my motor works lovely with 12v across its terminals.
What condition is yours currently?
Wow that looks very nice indeed. I don’t currently have one but do agree that it would be a nice feature to have in the engine bay. I refurbished one many years ago in my old coupe and in hind site there were a few parts I wish were swooped over before I sold it. Anyway if anyone has a reasonable one let me know?
