Sorry mate not sure I buy 73mpg fill to fill
I'm not so sure, a diesel one at 65mph on a motorway could possibly manage it.

You don't have to, all our experiences will vary, I drive like a Gran when I need to and no-one I know understands why, except they should because I get paid for my mileage, hence my ability to get the maximum possible out of the car when I need to.

Does anybody have any of the above engines in their VAG car. (211PS 2.0TFSI or the 170PS TDI) and if so what are your real world MPG figures?

Would be great if some TT and A5 coupe owners would be able to give their figures as these are the 2 cars I am looking at deciding between.

Thanks for any help.
Skoda Octavia VRS 170 TDI - 48.84 mpg
8500 on the clock. (2011 model)

Interesting discussion.... I have just ordered a Seat Leon FR and went for the petrol rather than the diesel.

Assuming 35 vs 45mpg real world averages and 10K miles per annum for the two engines you only save £300 a year with the diesel. Which on its own would make me get the petrol as it is faster, more 'pistonheads' sytlie engine (revs above 4000rpm) and doesn't smell nasty.

The fact that the petrol cars can be bought for £1500 less than the diesel clinches the deal!

Nasty oily smelly slow noisey yucky derv powered lump with 5 years ROI or lovely smooth revy petrol!

My mum IS a gran and drives her VRS Fabia like one on long trips she has had trip readings of 70+mpg but had never got anything like that fill to fill

I've had 59mpg out of my Superb on a trip but never had over 50mpg fill to fill, best was 48.6 iirc and that was on deserted French roads

My old 2006 A3 2.0T quattro did an average of 28.4mpg, although that was mainly driving around town. On long journeys, the average was about 36mpg with a peak of 40mpg. Not bad for a car with an EC combined 31.7mpg!

The newer cars (including those with the totally new 210bhp 2.0T) are generallyt better on fuel.

TT with the older 2.0TFSI (197bhp) engine ... about 34-40mpg on the motorway depending on speed but mid twenties in typical urban traffic. Over 18k miles so far, 31.5mpg average. All according to the onboard computer which may not be accurate, of course.

Biggest factor off of the motorway seems to be how often you have to brake and then speed up again (i.e traffic congestion and dawdling drivers). If you can keep a constant high pace then even 'making progress' you can get 35mpg+ on A and B roads.

The new 2.0 litre TFSI (211bhp) is reportedly even more economical.

I did those exact calculations, I started the thread to make sure I was looking at the right figures. By my calculations the petrol is the better choice financially too. Even if I up the mileage a little more.

When reading this thread I thought somebody should do a "what Mpg" site
in English.
No money in that, as it is already there: http://whatmpg.co.uk/

The German equivalent being http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/ which has a large and
sound data base.

Don't think it's that accurate, my A3 i get on a long trip very good MPG, for example 200 miles to Bristol recently @65mph returned 73mpg. @75mph home it returned 64mpg, round town it drops to 40mpg, and very short runs to the shops only sees 34mpg.

that is impressive yes

Now I’ve done a few more miles, and she’s finally run in.

Real world brim to brim best ever tank was 830 miles, you can get about 1/2-3/4 gallon over the tank size quoted if you brim it really well...

Normally I get around 55mpg in a real world tank full, with a 25 mile journey of 3 miles B road, 18 miles A road, then the last leg is B roads. All just outside of the main travel times, so I maximise the mpg, I also managed 102,900 miles on a set of disks and pads

Not bad hey.

Vw Tiguan with the 2.0 tsi 210 engine

obviously a bit heavier than a golf,

averaging about 26 mpg normal everyday driving around town etc,

and get about 34 mpg on a steady run.

Holy thread resurrection biggrin

While we're here...

Leon FR with the 211PS 2.0TSI with DSG, motorway about 35-40, short 3-4 mile runs can get 27-29 trying hard.

Cupra 280 with DSG, motorway and any constant runs 10+ miles hits 35mpg pretty quickly, but the short journey is about 22. Trying really hard and just letting it roll off without much throttle can get about 26.

2008 Audi A3 2.0TDI Quattro 170bhp but I was told it has been re mapped to 205bhp.

I do about 75 mile round trip every day for work. Mainly motorway and a good chunk of 50mph zones.

My average seams to be about 54mpg. I have worked this out myself. Surprisingly my trip computer seams to under read.

I have done about 70k init coming up to 140k now. It seams to have got more economical and use less oil in this time.

After the above oil comment, I'd like to add, in 113,000 miles, I've not topped up once, and it doesn't seem to drop on the dipstick between services at all.
