It recommends to top it up by 1 ltr in the manual which is what I've done.
Sorry? Why didn't you top it up by the amount required to put it to the top Mark on the dipstick? And what does the manual say about topping up? That it's a litre from the bottom to top dipstick marks?

Sorry but consulting the manual just strikes me as being a pretty arse about face way of doing a top up!!

Few guys at work with these engines, all say about the high oil consumption. It does appear to be normal.

There is no dip stick! Just shows on the screen in the car what level your at and knowing that putting too much oil in can damage the engine I thought I would do the non-manly thing and consult the manual. wink

What a stupid thing to do. I can't to see the havoc caused by level sensors when they start to fail!

Not really, all you have to do is drain all the usable oil out and re-establish the correct amount...

Joking aside, seriously, yeah, that is really going to bite especially if they all use quite a bit 'tween services...seems to have been a spate of VAG fecktardiness in the designs of some portions of their vehicles the last few years, from having to remove the front bumpers of some to replace lightbulbs to no way of cross checking your vehicles lubrication reservoirs...

The most reliable thing Audi had and they deleted it!!!
Hate the the electronic thing how do you check your oil before a long run when without warming the engine up 1st.

FWIW (and off the top of my head), I've used four litres worth of top ups - not including x3 services - in 17k miles of 2.0T ownership...

...Which probably works out at an oil service alternated with a top-up every 6 months/3k miles.

Hmm, others have said there is no dipstick. So.... just how are you supposed to check the oil level as per the manual?????

Tis only the new stuff without a dipstick - I ripped that manual out of an 07 A4 I think.

Thought I'd do a quick update on this thread for those out there with the same engine and same potential issues.

Over the past 12 months the oil consumption has gradually got worse to the point where I was adding 1 ltr of oil every 550 - 600 miles. During its long life service I asked them to check it out but they said that nothing was wrong.

After a bit of research and general disbeleif at the amount of oil it was getting through I spoke to another dealership near where I work (Epsom Audi) and they agreed to carry out an oil consumtion test under warranty. They completed this test today and have just informed me that there is a problem and that they will need to do a full angine rebuild including pistons and piston rings etc.
Overall I'm quite happy with this, at least they have admitted a problem and it shows I'm not alone in thinking that that sort of oil consumption on a modern petrol engine is crazy!!

Just wanted to add it so that if there is anyone else having the same issues then don't give up pursuing it!!

Cheers

Chris

Wow - big old job but at least the warranty is covering it.

I've once (and once only) seen one of these engines with a broken piston ring. No obvious reason for it failing but a little piece of the top ring came away, scored the bore and the engine started to drink oil like you wouldn't (or would in this case) beleive.

These engines are either not being built properly at the factory, or their new owners are babying them from new. Given the gridlocked state of the country and everyone doing 60mph to save fuel (well get in the feckin inside lane and save fuel then, grrrr), high load and high rpm oppurtunities are rare, ergo the bores get glazed and oil consumption increases.

Having said that, german engines do like a drink. Every VW, BMW and Audi I've every owned drank oil. My Mum's old 1994 Corolla used nothing at all between it's 16,000 mile oil changes.

I can't comment on how it was driven when being in but I certainly don't give it an easy life. I do about 25k a year so it gets a lot of work and part of my commute includes some great back roads. Other than the obvious issue this engine is brilliant. Hopefully it will be even better when I get it back.

On a side note I'm guessing I'm effectively going to need to run this engine in again? What are peoples thoughts with these engines? Low revs for 1000 miles or high revs everywhere and break it in?

That I was always taught; don't labour it, don't stay at constant, do use the revs/power and change the oil after the first few miles.

I may well be completely off the mark there; it's one of those arguments that goes round in circles every time it's asked laugh

To counter that I have had have/had a total of 9 VAG group products, one from new, and none of them have ever used more than 0.5 litres of oil between services. In fact I think I have only ever had to top up one of them between services.

IMHO is is totally dependent on the driver and how mechanically sympathetic they are.

Reading this post, I was compelled to check the oil. Open the bonnet no dipstick!!!

Then go to check into the MMI, under car settings - oil levels. It says check in 2 mins, engine needs to be off. So I turn the engine off, go ino settings for oil level - says engine needs to be switched on to configure.... WTF!!!

Even tried again after going for drive, lifted the hood.. Doesn't work!!

Any ideas anyone????
