Just checked and seen that my wifes 2006 Octavia has the BXE engine. I had read a bit these failures before, but had forgotten and hadn't thought to check what ours was at the time. It's currently on 81k miles and has a very easy life. I see it had a new turbo fitted by a previous owner, but since we've owned it it has only needed routine servicing. Maybe it's time to move it on.
Yeah my wife's 56 Leon is the same but we would never agree on what to buy instead. She wants a 4x4 but we need nothing more than a small estate really! I changed it from long life servicing to yearly when I met her in 2010 and before I knew about these problems. It does about 7-8k between oil changes which I assume can only help. It's on 68k miles now and I do have a certain amount of paranoia about it to be honest. What's the highest milage non fked BXE engine anyone has ever seen?

Hi, where can I find my engine number?
Skoda Fabia VRS
Normally they were ASZ (130), good engine so no need to panicSkoda Fabia VRS
Engine code can be found in any of these places:
1. Sticker on Cam Belt Cover
2. on your registration document (first 3 digits of the engine number)
3. On the production sticker (under the boot carpet next to the spare)
4. On the production sticker (in the front cover of the service book)
The above applies to all VAG vehicles, except for some van ones are hidden behind ply lining etc. & T5's are under the dash next to the pedal box

VAG in catastrophic mechanical failure shocker. Still, nice badges and dashboards right.
I've had a few VAG cars and never really had any problems. This BXE engine business is making me nervous though. I've recently moved from an oil burning A4 to a petrol Honda and couldn't be happer with it. Just got to get shot of the Octavia and we'll be VAG and hopefully diesel free.Only thing I could suggest would be to either buy a cheaper version as the BXE engine's attract a huge premium as they're failure prone and try to make it work of buy the expensive engine and change the rods, bearings and little ends.
I can't see there being that much difference between the blocks but you never know. I have a friends who has a spare old block out of a golf (have no idea of the code)sitting doing nothing and the man with the Skoda with the blown engine (nutter with the divining rods). I have thought of trying to get the two together and seeing what was what.

Bumping an old thread for a friend as it just happened his Leon BXE
Anyone know best route for repair ?
Alternative engine, short motor etc ?
There's a local BXE motor at a scrap year, but £1k for something that could fail at any minute just seems mental.
What has failed?Anyone know best route for repair ?

If its cam and followers, new camshaft, new hardened followers, all new white metal bearings top end, new bolts, then sump off and new oil pickup, full engine flush, belt, tensioner and waterpump, bolt up and change the oil after 1k running in.

I thought that one of the engine codes close to bxe could be swapped straight in? Can't remember the code but remember reading it. Is it bls maybe?
I think as a true PHer it's your duty to find out which one I have a very cheap nice Octavia with my name on it if you doLooks like a BKC is the best bet?
Just to add, I have no idea if the info is accurate and have never changed or fixed a bxe engine!

That thread comes up a lot but still nobody saying 100% yes it fits with no issues, but a few suggest BKC is the one to use, some suggesting ASL I think it was, the engine prior to the BXELooks like a BKC is the best bet?

Failure is same as the rest, rod through side of the block.
Not 100% sure on mileage would need to check, but fairly sure it's sub 100k.
22/5/2015 - Another for the list.
07 plate Skoda Octavia 1.9 PD TDI, BXE engine code with 102,000 miles, 4th conrod has exited out of the sump, car regularly serviced and no oil warning light at the time.
Quote of £5.5k from an independent VAG specialist garage for a totally new engine, not recon, have decided to sell the car on eBay as a non runner.

2008 VW Golf Estate 68,000miles full service history, always reliable good mpg. Then the car tried to kill me 70mph on motorway, a loud bang engine locked up car hit centre reservation bounced off. Managed to drop clutch and coast to hard shoulder with cars just missing me. Oil all over road wife and dog in car. AA turned up, he told me about the BXE engine problem and how many cars he had collected. Car taken to local independent VW dealer, who also new of the problem. Phoned VW UK to complain, they know of no problem with these engines apparently. Phoned 3 local VW dealers who all new about the problem. Quoted £6000 for new engine VW not interested. Local independent fitted BKC engine in place of BXE, engine and fitted £1400. I will sell car and buy something non VAG. Bodywork going through insurance.
