New pistons in old bores isn't what I would class as a 'fix'. It should have had a new short block fitted. It probably would have worked out cheaper for Audi in the long run. 15K over 2 years isn't a lot. Sounds like he doesn't drive it hard either, which can be a problem when it comes to establishing a decent piston ring to cylinder seal.

If it fails the oil consumption test again, I will be asking them what the options are. I will suggest a new block, pistons etc. To be honest the FiL is fast loosing the love for the brand and is keen to move over to another German manufacturer.

I will keep you all informed.

Most German cars have some kind of Achilles heel. He may be jumping out of the pan and into the fire, but I can understand how this experience would try his patience and lose faith in the Audi brand......especially when a brand new crate engine (block & head) from VAG for a base spec TFSI is about £3K, which they could have fitted in a day and been done with it.....but no....this being the UK, everything is done the hard and expensive way.

Well what ever you do, don't let him buy a Porsche or you'll be under the patio.

Honestly, time to move it on and buy something non-VAG.

Car went in to Audi Swindon and they have started the oil Consumption test.
Drained oil, Added oil, took oil out again, weighed it and the put it back in again. He is now off driving 600m before he has to go back.
They did not comment on the juddering clutch.....

Will keep you all posted.

Apologies. I forgot to update this thread.

The car failed the oil consumption test and managed under 600 miles per litre of oil.

Audi agreed to pick up 50% of the cost of replacing the conrods and pistons, plus ancillery components. I wrote via my solicitor to the garage near Reading where we bought the car and they offered to pay the remaining costs.

All in all the total bill was circa £4 to £5k including labour. Audi Swindon had the car for around 2 wks. This was all before the commonly reported probelm of oil consumption. It was a real head ache and took up days of my time on the phone and with solicitors.

Well done for persevering with your Dad's car, that's a lot of effort but completely worth it.

I've just purchased a 2010 A3 Sportback with the 1.8TFSI engine. It was from a good friend who recently paid nearly £4k on engine work as the cam chain tensioner failed. The head was skimmed, new camshaft, valves etc. He advised me it uses around 1l of oil per 800 miles but now in my ownership it's more like 1l per 100 miles if driven hard and 200 miles under gentle driving.

The engine is obviously affected by this piston ring issue and is now 9 years old. I presume there is no point chasing this up with Audi given the age and the fact it's had Indy servicing (correct intervals)? Nightmare

Thanks Meeko.

It was hard work and it seems that a few month after i went through this pain, Audi opened the flood gates and starting acknowledging the problem and repairing without fighting customers.

Your case sounds like hard work, especially due to the age of the car and the time elapsed.

Its worth a try.....
