Hi,

I’m currently looking for an A4 1.8 TFSI with a manual gearbox (160 or 170 bhp), up to 2 years old. Are there any known issues I need to be aware of with this model and, in particular, does this version of the 1.8 engine suffer from the oil consumption problem associated with the 2.0 TFSI.

Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Oil problems sorted on late cars like you're looking at. I really rate that as an engine in the A4. Smooth and quiet, good on fuel, not silly expensive to buy and has ample power without the torque steer the more powerful FWD cars suffer from.

A sound choice smile

Also if you find a 120bhp version (they do do one) and it's cheap get it - the engine is the same as the 160/170 versions and can be remapped to 200ish bhp

Thanks to both for the helpful replies.

This is just a quick update to say that I’ve now purchased a 15-plate A4 Avant 1.8 TFSI SE Technik (170bhp). I’ve had it for only a few days but so far, so good and Dr G was spot-on with his comments about it being smooth, quiet and adequately quick. I haven’t done enough mileage yet to get a proper fix on the fuel consumption but the high gearing bodes well for that and certainly gives very relaxed motorway cruising.

Having swapped from my trusty old 54-plate Volvo V70 D5 (10+ years ownership & 143K miles), two differences really stand out so far: first, just how refined the petrol engine is compared with the diesel and, secondly, how much technology has moved on in 10+ years, especially in terms of the “user interfaces”.

Regards
Mike

Good result; SE Technik pretty decent value for money - I imagine that with the SE suspension and petrol engine is really nice and refined.

Hi good thread. Pretty much my question as well...how ever as I have budget constraints I seem to be landing on 2010 and 2011 cars....so two questions....

1. Did that year 1.8t suffers or was it just the 2.0t. I have feeling it was both.

2. DR G response above suggest later year were solved. From what year is a safe bet when it was solved?

Oil consumption problems affected both the 1.8 and 2.0. More so in the longitudinally mounted engines like in the A4. I believe 2012 onwards the issue was sorted. Plenty of info on Audi and Skoda forums.
