theres a fantastic thread on www.vwroc.co.uk - or .com can't remember about the dsg.

It takes a while to get your head around but you have to rememeber its 2 clutches and not like a normal auto.

From what I have read (and difficult as I haven't driven a dsg car before) you have to re learn how to drive it.
It's this one.... http://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/12990-dsg-in-spo...

I've driven a few supercars with paddle changes (and a few autos), they don't take long to get used to.

You need to stop thinking of the DSG, though, as a better manual and think of it as a more controllable automatic.

Under some circumstances DSG can beat a manual change, but it can't KNOW that you're going to want to change down two or three gears because a hairpin is coming up after a long straight, I guess super radar/gps enabled boxes could have a guess, but I don't think any of the cars I've ever driven had that, give it ten years...

Manual and a good driver (not the sort who roll up to a junction, come to a halt and then look to see if it's clear...) will always beat an automated box for downshifts more than one gear, because YOU prepare for it and the automated box can't.

I'm no fanboi, though, I'm only getting DSG because the estate doesn't come with a manual box (The idea of an automatic is a bit horrific to me. I've never met one I liked...)

On the positive side, it's not a pure slushbox, so I'm going to embrace its novelty and see how I get on.

M

maccas99 - thanks for the link that's the one!

Its difficult for me to comment as I don't have my car yet, but am looking forward to seeing how it works and if DSG is all its cracked up to be.

Have driven autos in the USA and did a bit of driving in my dads auto rover 75 so have a little experiance of autos but this will be my first owned one by me.

It does seem a system that prefers going up the gears rather than down - and it should be said a auto in my opinion can never replace a manual (maybe this is why bmw use the ZF 8 speed box instead of a dual clutch transmission?).

AT the end of the day the computer brain of the car doesn't know whats coming up - but we do.

Well my insurance renewal came through today reminding me that I'm nearly a year into ownership of my R estate.

So far so good, 28,000 miles in and no problems (aside from the dozy service techs who broke the bonnet release cable when they did the service). Long term mpg is 31 average, service indicator allowed me nearly 19,000 before the first service (most of my miles are long motorway slogs). I replaced the original tires at the 1st service with Eagle F1 Asymmetric at £400. All very acceptable costs.

In terms of driving I love it, it's sometimes a little sluggish off the mark (for getting onto busy roundabouts I'd prefer a manual I think!) but once it's moving it goes like st off a stick, and with mostly motorway miles the dsg is superb - as is the front radar assist.

Handles tidily and is so much more comfortable than my old Megane estate, and the Insignia I had before that.

Straight line speed and traction seems to be it's party trick though; I've used the launch control 3 times in total I think, and managed to record (just to see - and slightly unscientifically) what I think is a fairly impressive 0-60 in 4.6 seconds and 0-100 in 7.8. The way the gearbox allows the engine to put down the power from a standing start seems to vary quite a bit but when it really hooks up its quite surprisingly quick off the mark.

As for exclusivity - I didn't see another R estate on the road until I'd had the car about 3 months. There's a black one and white one based not far from me, and I've seen a couple of red and one LSG estate in the past year, but probably 100-150 R/GTi/GTD hatch for every estate.

I've noticed a bit of unwanted attention in the past few months, but generally nobody gives it a second glance which suits me fine.

Going back to that insurance renewal - after a year of incident free motoring and another years NCB, I'm disappointed to see a £250 increase in the auto-renewal premium!! That's a hefty laziness tax. I'd better start shopping around.

Hope all the other fellow bargain-r owners are enjoying their cars (although the "bargain" bit doesn't really hold when you do 28,000mpa on a 10,000 mile allowance!!!!)

Good to read someone enjoying their estate. I am very excited. I log in every day on the vw tracker to see if theres any progress even tho it tells me the cars not due to start being built from may first. I currently have no car just now due to my Focus st timing belt jump and destroying its engine. So its went from looking forward to the R to needing it asap.

Just get the VW App for your phone and turn on txt alerts that way you won't miss anything :-)

The next quarters deals will be in July, but could be on Passat's, Beetles, Tourags, who knows
Golf R deals may not be seen again this year.

Not this again. Learn to drive it properly, will you?

Mine is never in the wrong gear in that situation, because I use the paddles to, y'know, choose the gear I want in advance, like you would if only you'd done some research beforehand and bought a manual.

I find the same, launching it out of junctions and onto roundabouts is an option (and is fun when quiet) but not exactly the best way to do things!

Did you request quote from VWFS for additional miles to get them half price? It should soften the blow.

I haven't yet, although my brother had to do that with his Audi A4 leased through the company. He'd gone way over the allowance and got a good rate reduction agreed. Having said that, since I got my car they put the rate up from 6ppm +vat to 10ppm - or so I've read. I'll still ask the question but I think it's less likely I'll get a discounted rate now,

Eh?

I don't drive it in manual everywhere. It's in auto probably 95% of the time, but even in auto I use the paddles to choose the gear I want to be in, if I think the auto might not have guessed correctly. I do the same in a conventional auto as I don't like kickdown (in any kind of auto), it's too unpredictable & jerky - and I do it whoever's in the car, 6-year-olds, grannies, or on my own. It makes the drive much smoother.

I'm no ultimate helmsman by any means, but I understand how DSG works, its pros & cons (the pros outweigh the cons IMO), and I drive my car in a way that makes it work how I want, with minimal extra effort. Why don't you?

confused

Ok, it doesn't work like you want it to, but by changing the way you drive in a trivially small way, it could be just as responsive as you'd like it to be..

Or, keep driving it like you do, expecting it to work like a conventional auto and cursing it every time you're in the wrong gear at a roundabout, and I'll keep driving it like I do, enjoying its quick changes and always being in the right gear.

Either way, I'll be happy with my choice.
