Yes...in that utopian world where there's sweeping roads with no traffic.
In my world i use the golf to drive into Bristol. I had a manual S3 sportback before and i grew to hate not it, but the fact it was a manual in the endless stop start traffic.

Put simply, its not as black and white as you make out

Nice but that isn't dirty at all.
You need to join the not cleaning your car for winter 2017 thread to see dirty (check the 2016 thread too).

After 3 days in my new R estate I’ve just driven my manual R hatchback and I’d agree that it is more involving with the manual ‘box, and as such a more satisfying car to drive in the right circumstances. The estate does the complete car thing so well though that I think the DSG ‘box suits it better.

That makes perfect sense. For me (although not got my R yet), the benefit of any dual clutch transmission is the speed of gear change, hence 1/2sec quicker to 62 & the effortless way they make progress. Also i do long journeys, thus plenty of traffic, so the thought of not having to ride the clutch & the simplicity of an Auto in traffic is a huge benefit. Last manual car i had was a B7 RS4 & still to date even having had much much quicker vehicles, it was possibly the best overall car i ever had.

I would agree with much of that, but given the choice I would still have taken a manual personally.

I was driving mine recently on a quiet, dark, B-Road and the combination of speed and narrow field of view actually made me feel a bit nauseous! biggrin

I do enjoy the performance and the tech, but I'm already thinking I'll get something a bit more mundane next time, it seems to me that the R is just too quick to really exploit very often.

M.

PS In reality, I don't suppose I will and I'll probably be looking at 340is and S4s biggrin

Anybody know what the tyre pressures are for a 7.5 hatch?

Tyre pressure warning came up on the M3 this morning, car feels fine so I carried on, tried resetting but it stated "Unable to verify"

Can’t you just look at the table on the drivers door frame?

Imagine what it’s like driving an RS6 or E63 wagon!

I did when I found it, still shat myself on the motorway for 5 mins thinking I had a flat, when I didn't! I discovered it will only re calibrate at a standstill

Sounds like it's a proper pressure tpms as opposed to one that monitors axle speed and compares tyre diameters?

Glad I am not the only one that thinks this. Don't get me wrong its a nice car, but honestly, I have already said to the missus a S4 estate next, mainly for the engine noise, don't like the way the golf sounds really.

Although the missus would be happier if I got something slower. Doesn't like the quickness of the R.

The only thing I’d buy an S4 for is the interior, and even then things like the Virtual Cockpit are extra (to the tune of £750!). From the drivers seat it doesn’t sound appreciably better, nor is it any faster. When I test drive one (albeit a saloon) it was amortising to around £420 a month, or £100 more than my R estate, and although it’s probably a nicer car, I don’t think it’s a better car, and certainly not worth the extra outlay for me. If I was going up a level (extra £10k list) then I’d be looking at the C43 wagon.

Not sure we do think alike, I'm quite happy with the R's sound (I've got the noise box turned right down, I'm not too fussed about the sound an engine makes, something quiet and swift is fine with me).

My main point was that the R is too quick to exploit, an S4 will be even moreso!

I'd be happiest if Mazda made an RX9 estate biggrin

My wife drives our R Estate every day, and I honestly don't think she realises how quick it is. She just drives it at her comfortable pace.

That is the beauty of the R, though, it's bloody quick (anything lauded as faster is only by small degrees) and yet really is as happy pootting about quietly and returning decent MPG, without being all shouty, Max-Power "look at me!!!!!"

I went to the station in mine yesterday, it's in the country with a windy 60MPH road, but as usual there was someone doing 35-40 up ahead. I just stuck it in E and relaxed.

On the way home I got some moron doing 30 on the same stretch, so I booted it when I got a straight and was able to continue at a decent speed.

The R is very good at that...

Sorry I took your quote as being the golf r is plenty fast enough (maybe too fast) - so you would look for something a bit slower but then end up in something like a s4 (which is even faster than a golf r).
