The Cupra (Black) Lease thread
Discussion
So one month in and I am loving the car... Still surprised at how quick it is. The wind noise from the drivers window seal is driving me mad (even with my music turned to 11) so I will see if I can get that sorted at the stealers.
Quick questions (and apologies if this has been covered earlier in the thread) - Winter Tyres? Has anyone put them on their Cupra? If so, what wheels and tyres did you go for and how much?
I have never invested in winter tyres but a few of my mates have and rave about them.
I am spending most of my time wheel spinning down the road so maybe I would make smoother progress with a set of winter tyres.

Get that into a dealer, it's obviously not right. They'll fix it.Quick questions (and apologies if this has been covered earlier in the thread) - Winter Tyres? Has anyone put them on their Cupra? If so, what wheels and tyres did you go for and how much?

I haven't put winters on mine, but recently the roads up here have been a lot drier and I have a noticeable increase in traction. Planted the go pedal in 2nd gear last night from about 15 MPH. Right to the floor. No wheel spin, just a nice (natural) exhaust note.
I managed to pick up a set of Michelin winters off ebay recently, came off a Golf R and still had 7mm all round. £300 or so, very happy with that.
Haven't noticed a massive difference tbh, still grips well and loses traction fairly easily. But when the heavy snow comes..................

Anybody figured out the 'skip bar' on the main screen when using bluetooth audio? Every time I try to scroll through a song with it, I just get "option not available" and have to use the terrible fast forward function on the steering wheel controls.
I tried the BT audio and quickly forgot about it, poor quality sound and features.I was on Spotify which worked ok, but sometimes very slow to startup.
So tried Apple Music and its spot on, great sound quality and features.
I've only ever put winter tyres on rwd cars. When the weather was properly cold you noticed the difference and they were amazing in the few cm of snow we got for a day or 2 each year.
The downside was that anywhere around 7 degrees + they actually performed worse than your average regular tyre. It was particularly noticeable via more wheel spin. Obviously being in the UK, even in Scotland this makes it a bit tricky as we tend to get 10deg one day, -2deg the next.
Probably still a good idea if you rely on the car no matter the conditions. I just found they aren't really about performance, by their very nature they are softer with smaller tread blocks.

Bit of a bump here.
I normally keep my car in my individual setting (Eco engine, comfort suspension, slip diff on cupra).
Now if I have the car set on cupra mode when I turn it off, when I turn it back on, everything will stay in cupra mode except the engine; and the exhaust will be quieter again as it's gone back to ECO? Until you re-select the cupra mode. Is that correct? When I select cupra mode I'm noticing a hell of a lot more pops than in comfort or eco; I'm guessing those would disappear unless I re-select cupra mode after turning it off.

Correct - you have to reselect Cupra mode (or individual if you've got Cupra mode selected for engine). I normally keep my car in my individual setting (Eco engine, comfort suspension, slip diff on cupra).

Every time I get in the car I drive off then reselect Individual mode again so I get the pops and bangs!

Nice one thanks. Bit of a pain that the computer takes so long to allow the mode selector screen to appear!.Every time I get in the car I drive off then reselect Individual mode again so I get the pops and bangs!

I cannot get a fart, pop or bang out of mine - I am wondering if the ST exhaust is different and quietens everything down??
On mine (manual, 5dr hatch) even in eco mode if I put it into neutral and just take it to around 3k RPM I'll hear pops; with the drivers door open. at 4k, where the limiter kicks in, if i let off very quickly, I'll get even more. In cupra I'm getting about 4-5 more pops per cycle of doing the aforementioned than in eco. From cold start, I get a little burble or two just when the car auto-blips.

it is, the ST retains the 280 exhaust.
basically the difference is the 280 had 3 boxes on exhaust like the Golf GTI, where as the 290 has the Golf R exhaust with 2 boxes.
Just to add a wee bit more detail...basically the difference is the 280 had 3 boxes on exhaust like the Golf GTI, where as the 290 has the Golf R exhaust with 2 boxes.
The 280 SC and 5 door had three boxes - centre resonator, a small mid-silencer and a large rear silencer.
The 290 ST has the same setup as the 280 ST – centre resonator, no mid silencer, then splitting into two smaller silencers (one on each side) rather than one larger silencer as with the non-ST variants.
The 290 SC and 5 door just has the centre resonator and a slightly less restrictive rear silencer as per the Golf R.

That would explain the "quietness" of the exhaust - is it likely to have a few less ponies as a result? The 280 SC and 5 door had three boxes - centre resonator, a small mid-silencer and a large rear silencer.

I wonder if the new Cupra 300 ST has the same system as the Golf R?
Has the following happened to anyone else...cruising on motorway in 6th gear, rpm just under 3k, I lift off from throttle as approaching a car in front, 'bang'.
Sounded like shards of glass hitting the underside of the car or some barbed wire. Looked in rear view mirror, no obvious objects to be seen. I've heard loud bangs before when changing from 2nd to 3rd or lifting off the throttle in 3rd, but this was something else.
Was in cupra mode.

DSG or Manual ? Sounded like shards of glass hitting the underside of the car or some barbed wire. Looked in rear view mirror, no obvious objects to be seen. I've heard loud bangs before when changing from 2nd to 3rd or lifting off the throttle in 3rd, but this was something else.

I mustn't be trying hard enough because I have not been able to do this.
Easy in my old Chimaera because it was straight through and feathering the throttle would be like a machine gun going off.
Going to give it a go later.

In my manual, you can make it pop/crackle on overrun if you rev match your gear changes to 4k and below - sometimes you're treated to a bang or two if you get the exhaust nice and hot and it runs down from just above 4k. As you say with the Chim, if you blip on gear change then give it a really gentle throttle tap after letting the clutch up then you get the crackle.I mustn't be trying hard enough because I have not been able to do this.

Edit: you must be in Cupra mode (or Cupra engine mode in individual) for this to work. When you restart the car, you need to change modes and reselect Cupra (Or individual) to get back into the Cupra fuel map for pops/crackles/bangs.

Manual. I'm sure you'll get it. If I'm honest, the majority of the bangs I get are unintentional.I mustn't be trying hard enough because I have not been able to do this.
