I have bought myself a three year old Tiguan, it's a Diesel 4motion with DSG.

It has a noise like a fan that only happens while moving, noticeable at about 20mph and gets a bit louder the faster I go.

It doesn't change with the engine revs or different gears, also turning left or right makes no change to the sound.

I thought originally it was a noisy fan but the noise is there even if the blowers are completely off.

Is there anything else I can try to pinpoint the noise? It has two months warranty left so I may have to get it looked at if I can't sus it out.

Thanks

Propshaft centre bearing is a common failure point on these, and your description sounds about right for a bearing failure of some sort.

Any decent propshaft specialist should be able to do the job.

Thanks, i'll get it booked into VW, would you expect it to be replaced under warranty if it is the centre bearing?

Car is under it's three year warranty until late December and has 40K miles.

To diagnose the car needs to be on a ramp which allows all 4 wheels to spin. You can't miss a worn centre bearing when on a suitable ramp-it's bloody noisy. If under warranty, yes it would be replaced. Ive had one go on exactly the same car. They are meant to last 80k miles. VW do not sell the bearing as a part-the entire prop shaft will need replacing at £1300. If it were me id visit a local garage you've used and ask them to take a look. If it is the bearing no point waiting for VW to diagnose it.

VW just called, after inspection they have diagnosed a prop shaft centre bearing smile

Hopefully I'll get the car back on Monday.

Thanks for the advice chaps.

I hate it when car manufacturers do this, scrap the whole assembly just to replace a bearing that costs £20 tops and give the customer a 4 figure bill...

Hi guys, I have a 2011 Tiguan 2.0l diesel automatic with 114k miles on the clock. Started hearing a similar noise c.18 months ago and the local VW main dealer said it might be the prop shaft centre bearing but keep under review. Noise has remained since but hasn’t got any worse. Last week, when car in for new front brake discs and pads, the same main dealer said that the prop shaft needs replacing and recommended not to drive the car. Took the car to a local non-main dealer garage for a second opinion and they said that it doesn’t need replacing any time soon. The noise is still there when driving but not any worse than it has been. Any advice please? Don’t really want to spend £1,400 if I don’t need to. Thanks!
