Back in January, I drove my old man's new RRS S/C from England to Austria as a luggage-wagon for a ski trip. A fantastic vehicle for the job, it was supremely comfortable and quick and hauled a massive amount of kit cross-continent in -12c at 100mph without a complaint. Not the most economical vehicle, but averaging roughly 22mpg fully-laden at autobahn speeds was pretty good in my book! I was smitten.

On getting home, I started thinking about replacing my current car, a 2008 BMW 320D Estate... in Grey. A great car that suited my needs and had served me faithfully for 4 years and 80,000 miles (in addition to the 60k it had when i bought it). But, it was pretty boring, and things were starting to go wrong.

I'd owned a Defender 90 Hard Top as a daily before, which was fun, but not ideally suited to living in a city and commuting to work each day. The lack of sound insulation was a killer, and not being able to go much more than 60mph on a motorway was frustrating. Oh, and it also got nicked once too... so that wasn't really an option i thought i could consider.

My dad had owned a few discoveries and a couple of other range rovers in the past, so i'd had a bit more exposure to the brand than just the extremes.

I was considering almost anything with a green oval - Disco, Disco Sport, Evoque, Freelander etc...

Discoveries were looking like a good option - practical, comfortable, and the disco4 didn't seem to be too horrific in the mpg stakes... so made my case to my other half. Approved... Great! Financially, it would be exactly in budget too... but probably best to wait until the summer to allow our house purchase to get sorted.

Plan in place, i happily browsed the classifieds and started dreaming of my ideal spec.

Now, you may be wondering why I'm talking about discoveries in a thread about the vast consumption of unleaded...

Well, my aforementioned dad rang me up about 6 weeks ago and said he'd found my next car. It was at a garage near to him, at a great price, and with very low mileage for it's age...

What was it?

A 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged.

st.

I could afford to buy it.

I could afford to insure it.

I could (just about yikes) afford to tax it.

Could I afford to fuel it? Maybe.

A quick test drive a week later, with a few negotiations, I bought it...

My first V8, and in fact, my first car with >4 cylinders!

Is it the worst financial decision I've ever made? Yes. I now have a Shell card, and a Nectar card... and the people in petrol stations laugh at me regularly.

On the other hand, it's a fine piece of kit, and I've found the best way to get over the fuel consumption woes (14mpg town/20mpg motorway) is to just put my foot down and hear the glory of the supercharged V8.

Nice... smile

I love the 'snarl' on those as it jumps into life. Personally, I prefer the early 4.2SC as the later 5.0 was just a little bit too refined.

If it makes you feel better I ran a TDV8 for 7 1/2 years

On the motorway/Peage at 79mph it managed 28mpg on a good day
In town it was closer to 16mpg

So on the strength of that fill your boots!!

...which is precisely why I'm seriously considering the 5.0SC for my next car. Thing is, I prefer the power delivery of the TDV8 with it's low down grunt but I hate all the gumpf around Ad Blue, etc.

As for around town, I'm running a little Cooper S and lovin' it. wink
