Jetta mk5 diesel advice
Discussion
Hi all.
My Passat 2.0 CR TDi is going back as I'm leaving my job. I have been looking for a replacement under 3k and the Jetta seems the best value. It seems a mini Passat.
I have researched as much as possible , I am handy with a petrol engine but have no idea about diesels. The Passat was rock solid reliable and has done 80k.
The question is 1.9tdi (PD?) or the early 2.0 TDi. The latter seems more economical, and more powerful. But, I have read too much about the oil pump shaft failure. I would prefer the 2.0, but not if I'm asking for trouble. I have asked a few sellers for engine codes but not yet had a reply.
I have read it was the larger platform cars, Passat, A4 which has engines with the shafts, others were chain driven?
Also, do the early 2.0's have DPF's? As tbh that would rule them out.
All advice is appreciated.

Yes I have that engine in my b7 Passat DSG and it's a peach. I never even looked as I thought I'd have to at least double the budget. I would have to! But it allso gets you into a mk6 platform including the Golf estate which the dog would like.
The thing I liked about the 1.9PD is the vehicle price, and the basic mechanics of them. They also have a reputation for reliability. And no DPF...

£3k would definitely buy a Jetta with the 2.0 CR TDI, e.g. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017... or http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...
They're built to do the miles and I really wouldn't have any worries about them on 100k upwards. I sold my Mk6 Golf with the same engine when it was 4-years old on 105k and it had been faultless. Up to you though!
Also you mentioned the DPF - it doesn't seem to cause issues on these. I've only seen them have problems on the newer PD diesels (earlier one's don't have them as you say) and the 1.6 TDI

Budget creep!
After looking at 4 Jettas, 3 of which were advertised as CR but were actually PD, I have purchased a CR 140 Golf mk6. Excellent condition. It's a GT so lovely inside, and even better VW have confirmed it has NOT had the software fix. It will never see a VW dealer after my experience of my currant Passat CR software update.
The Jetta is truly dire inside. It's based on the mk5 Golf platform and has not aged well. Seems prone to rust too.
Getting back into a manual will be fun.
