Hi chaps,

Please see previous exhaust thread, decided to go for a non resonated milltek catback with stock downpipe.

The car is a mk6 gti edition 35 with the ea113 with dsg.

I'm worried about drone, I've had a e36 318is straight piped with no cat (too fking loud) and a droney e39 528i.

Whilst the car is not a commuter it does occasionally get used on the motorway and the better half uses it to transport the 18m old around so looking for almost zero drone or rumbling with the milltek.

Should I expect a fair amount of drone with a non res milltek with a dsg? Or will there be hardly any?

I've done Internet research to death and just looking for a opinion of someone who has had a non res with dsg.

Thanks!

Dr G

Whilst I've not driven that exact combination I do work for a MIlltek agent and in my experience you will suffer drone at motorway speeds.

Would it be excessive, I don't mind a little but overpowering vibration and rumble will kill me hehe

Short answer is if you want zero drone then you should avoid non-res.

Long answer is that everyone has a different tolerance to drone. Before I decided to go non-res on my R32 pretty much everything I read put me off. Now that I have it I wouldn't look back. Doesn't bother me in the slightest and is very minimal IMO, but then I also own a de-catted straight through car so it will always be quieter than that.

Having the windows open slightly at certain RPM helps, but at other RPM speeds the exhaust can be kept as quiet as standard. For me it was only worth spending the money if going non-res, otherwise I'd have kept the standard system.

Appreciate it's not the same car as yours but just noticed your post in the South Coast section; if you do attend the next meet I'm more than happy to show you the drone at different RPM's.

I have a mk6 GTi running APR stage 2 software, APR cast downpipe with sports cat and a fully resonated 3 inch race cat back exhaust and it does drone. I wish I would have gone for the 2.75 inch exhaust as that's more raspy. As another poster said everyone's threshold for drone is different. I must admit that when cruising at say 80-85 mph it's not too bad. i know you're looking at a non res exhaust so I can't comment on that but mine can drone a bit.

Hope that helps you a little.

This is excellent information and exactly what I needed to read! I'm basically in the same boat you were, I think I will order and not look back, appreciate you offering to listen to the drone, where abouts are you located on the southcoast? smile

Thank you for your input, I think your sound would be too loud or drone too much for me, so 2.75 non res should be perfect for me, thanks again!

3" is completely overkill for the TFSI and R32s just drone more than the 4 pots anyway.

If I were you I would get the APR downpipe and stick with the factory catback. It's not restrictive and it doesn't drone. The APR introduces a little raspiness but is a pleasant tone, if it's more noise you want?

Spot on. When I had the APR cast downpipe fitted the garage put the standard cat back exhaust back on as I bought the Milltek elsewhere and already had it at home and the APR downpipe attached to the standard cat back exhaust sounded really good.

I don't want a downpipe though, as I'm keeping stock cat and downpipe.

Why?

If you just want noise, cut the resonator box out. It's a monumental waste of money to replace the catback, and leave the biggest bottleneck in place, but each to our own!

Because my MOT man has quit the game.. So I will be out of luck come January 2018!!

Just an update for anyone who searches this in the future:

Milltek non res catback fitted....

No drone no horrible noises and it's not loud or intrusive at all, I don't know what all the fuss is about brilliant sound ZERO drone, dsg perfect even cruising in top gear.

Thanks all,

What size Milltek did you go for 2.75" or 3.00"?

Good choice and that's why there's no drone.

Ahh, didn't know that, read that even non res 2.75 would drone, it's just sounds awesome... I do have to have the windows down though.

Thinking of disabling the soundaktor as that's fake noise anyway.

Further update, you can disable the soundaktor via VCDS, only on mk7...

So it's unplugged, now the car sounds better again!
