But with 3 years ownership, you can't get away with one oil service only. It will be probably 2 oil services, brake fluid change and possibly spark plugs change which is recommended at 4 years or 38K miles, so that could be avoided, depending on mileage. There's a chance to take price of service down a little if there's a few dealership around or you're loyal customer.

I added 1l of oil before 1st service at 17K. Usual price is around £12 for bottle but sometimes there are bargains, like £2.36 when Morrison was getting rid of stock.

For S8 it's oil spec VW504.00 for long life service and VW502.00 for fixed service.

I collected mine today and met fellow PHer, w8pmc at the same time.

I was positively surprised that after recent MMI software update I can finally share internet from my Android phone and don't need SIM card for Audi Connect or traffic. No need to use pre-paid card any more. Also can read SMS on the screen, finally. Maps are already one version behind, as there's ver 6.25.3 out now and I have ver 6.24.2. Car was produced in May and sat somewhere until July and then at dealership since then.

I moved from S8 2015 to A8 3.0 Black Edition and here are my initial comments after driving 300 miles, mostly in rain.

From the options I lost and can immediately notice:
-260 horses - well, it's a diesel and it has half the power of S8, it's good enough for motorway but a bit noisy in town, it also seems to suffer from small power delivery delay, have to work it a bit harder than petrol. I probably alerted all neighbours when parking a bit uphill.
-Alcantara package - standard headliner is not as nice and smells awfully. I plan to leave the car in a garage with open windows, to get rid of that smell. It irritated my eyes. It could be some chemical stuff applied by dealer as part of body care package. No smell of nice new leather.
-Extended Leather on doors and dash - it's not very visible difference if you didn't have it before
-Audi parking system advanced with top view - standard rear camera is flat and gathers water drops which means I couldn't exactly see my driveway after driving in rain, never had this problem with 360 camera.
-Comfort seats - can't find right position in sport seats. Probably need more time to adjust them properly.

Also found a fault with rear windscreen, glass is distorted in lower part which can be immediately noticed as some cars look wider than they are and road lines get distorted. I don't think pursuing it with Audi bring anything useful, so will have to live with that.

21 inch wheels are ok, don' think they are noisier than 20 inch wheels from S8. They are quieter on concrete part of M25.

I'm sure I get used to the car and forget about options and power lost. I still have AMG to play with :-)

P.S. I didn't get Audi umbrella!

Good to meet you yesterday & i hope the drive back South was ok?

I didn't fall in love with mine straight away as like you was coming from a much quicker, more modern & better equipped car, however for the journeys i needed it for i've started to gel with the A8 & enjoy the more relaxed driving approach. I think the various drive modes take little time to learn what's required of them as Auto & Dynamic felt really weird on day one & Auto was a very firm ride, but now it's softened up & a real pleasure on the motorway.

Just keep in the back of your mind how much it's costing & the little frustrations & exclusions soon vanishsmile

I'm quite happy with the car. Just noted differences. Car is now locked in the garage with open windows and getting some limited fresh air. I would leave it outside with open windows for a few hours per day but weather is not very cooperative right now.

Value for money is good, and I have luxo barge as my daily, can't complain ;-)

Will hit the road when I get Ve103b from VWFS. Rhine Valley should look nice at this time of the year and they have plenty of cycling routes.

I know why 21 inch wheels are quieter than my previous 20 inch on S8. Apparently these are Conti Silent tyres with special coating inside to absorb the noise. Someone pointed it out to me on another forum. British brochure doesn't mention it, but in different countries there's extra wording. Spec from VIN is showing it as well: "Q66 Tires 275/35 R21 103Y XL (torus absorber)"

Never knew that & agree they are very quiet.

Just off outside to check what tyres are on mine. Any way to distinguish if they're Conti Silent as apposed to any other Conti tyre?

Edited to say having checked, they've got RO1 (Audi Spec) & Conti-Silent written on them so all good.

Here's the update on my car.

I pursued distorted rear windscreen with Crawley Audi. Technician said he doesn't know if it's normal or not and we have to go for a test drive and then compare to another A8. Their demo had similar issue but not as bad. So my car was deemed normal. There was also chat how S8 must have different rear windscreen and that's why I didn't have this issue. I checked and part numbers are not relevant to models but to equipment (tinted glass, etc). Went to another dealership and drove 2015 car and it didn't have this problem. Decided to wait for my ex-S8 to surface on a market and give it a test drive if it's in decent distance. However I doubt I wouldn't notice distorted view in the rear view mirror for 2 years, so the glass must have been ok.

In the meantime some rattle started coming from driver's door but it was intermittent. Was told to record it which I thought would be tricky but next day it started to rattle from start of the engine. Then, when I was driving in Belgium on really bad road, the same noise came from the other door. It was fixed under warranty and so far didn't come back.

Got rid off the bad interior smell thanks to baking soda tip from internet.

Regarding MMI and remote sim profile, now I think it probably worked in my previous car but I never configured it properly. I put SIM card straight away when internet from the phone didn't work and never investigated it.

In the meantime had a call from Audi Driveline to activate assistance and was also told that I have account manager at VWFS who will contact me within 3 weeks. Not sure if I was black listed or deemed difficult client by Audi or it's just new service. I complained to Audi UK when Audi Epsom refused to book me for warranty repair to investigate rear windscreen. They sent me to supplying dealer. Audi UK called me twice about it but dealer never bothered to apologise. Not that it mattered, I'm not going to bother to give them my business and they can't offer me anything for free anyway.

I only did 1400 miles in a month, 1000 of them on weekend in Germany and so far car is just decoration on a driveway. Looking for reasons to drive somewhere :-)

I'm glad I took the deal, I didn't see any other good offers on A6 Allroad or A8 since July. I looked at D5 configurator on Audi website and it seems to be poverty spec comparing to Black Edition. There are some electronic gadgets thrown in for free like HUD but they are not very important to me.

That's how the padding of the tyre looks in real life https://postimg.org/image/k9j87lxhh/ Hopefully picture won't disappear too soon, as it's not mine.

That's frustratingfrown

Still very happy with mine & no issues to report & the rear windscreen looks just as i'd expect & no different to any other car.

Not getting exclusive use now the Golf R's arrived as i want to get a few miles on that over the coming weeks & it is as expected a good giggle to drive. Think for now the both cars are a perfect mix of Fun & Luxury motoring.

A quick overview of my experience (and apologies for the late response as I didn't have my PH account password saved on my two other devices when I'd penned a post):

Car was faultlessly delivered by trailer with 40 miles on the clock. I had no need to worry there.

I had it on the drive for a week before I took it out - thought it was fantastic in the flesh and to drive. Best bits for me are the interior and the air suspension (which was one of my main reasons for going for the car). I found the throttle response to be terrible, and have that and the suspension set to 'dynamic'. The throttle does still catch me out occasionally, as I find it slightly reluctant to change down for what I want from it compared to my 535d, but don't find the 262ps engine sluggish once it gets going, despite it being single turbo versus my old 282ps 535d.

I've not used the car for around 4 weeks since I've had it, and have the VE103b (thanks PenelopaPitstop) and took the car to Belgium for a fortnight for work. Found the driving on the right beam pattern useful in the menu (a friend came over with his new A6 and didn't realise that setting was in the menu) as I really, really hate beam benders.

I've now done 3,400 miles and to both echo (and contradict) PenelopaPitstop:

- The standard seats are really, really comfortable. I've not quite got the right position on the seats although it doesn't routinely bother me.

- The rear view camera does get easily blocked out by raindrops. Slightly annoying when you're used to having it there.

- I have no issue at all with the rear windscreen. If you're near me (or we meet at Heathrow airport or something) you're welcome to see what you think of mine.

- No issues with the smell in my car.

- I had no cables at all in my car, but helpfully Shrewsbury Audi provided some FOC even though they didn't supply the car. Good service from them.

- I took the plunge on the 3 years servicing plan given my mileage is variable and bought a boot liner. Boot liner has come in very useful for luggage when I've been lugging 2-3 other colleagues around (the boot does take some careful packing as I always carry a holdall with hand tools/fire extinguisher/hi-viz jackets etc) despite it being very good for a saloon.

- I too have a 'Relationship Manager' from VWFS and had a lovely generic video (Introduction to Audi Financial Services Relationship Management) emailed to me. Not had one bit of contact other than this email.

Easily the best car I've had and I am so glad I got it, I really treat it like my own. I'd have also enjoyed an A7/Q7 I think, but would have paid through the nose for air suspension and the car to begin with compared to the A8 so the deal has been a no-brainer for me. I get 35mpg without issue in mixed motoring and have seen around 42-43mpg, all per the trip computer. Briefly entertained the idea of keeping a spreadsheet for fuel usage but life's too short...

Not sure what I'll replace this car with at the end of the term... not sure I'll enjoy handing it back really.

P.S. Looks great in silver.

I keep suspension in dynamic mode most of the time unless road is very bumpy and change gearbox to sport when I want to drive in more spirited way. Otherwise I'm ok with standard gearbox setting.

I agree, 360 degrees cams are much better and I didn't have this issue with more advanced parking system in previous A8.

I'm frequently at Heathrow but now I gave up with the rear windscreen. Too much hassle to sort it out and I don't plan to buy the car after the leasing term.

I'm using boot liner from Mercedes C-class w204. It fits almost perfectly. Money well spent 2 cars ago ;-)

I'm keeping cost spreadsheet for all my cars, a hobby. I'm at 3200 miles and average fuel consumption is 36mpg, mostly motorway driving. Went to Belgium and Germany before, now touring on continent again. Will probably clock 2-3K miles minimum. Don't have a set route yet, just going with the flow. My mileage is a bit randon, sometimes I don't drive a lot for weeks and then do long road trip for 2-3 weeks.

I put winter tyres on, couldn't find the same size for decent price so bought nearly new tyres from Audi RS6 as they were the closest match in good condition and available. So I'm driving on DUNLOP SP WINTER SPORT 4D 100W XL NST RO1 right now. Price new, £438 per tyre .... They have silencing padding as well. It's a bit noisier in the cabin but not tragic. Speedo is -3% but that's ok for me. I was a bit shocked at the wear of factory fitted Contis after 2K miles, when I took them off. All reviews says they wear quickly and I had the same issue in Mercedes, when I changed them due to "shredding" rather than low thread.

Enjoy the car!

Glad you're both still enjoying the A8. I've covered 4800 miles in my now & am still very pleased with it. I leave mine 95% of the time in Auto on the Drive Select & have yet to feel that doesn't cover every base. Every now & again i select Dynamic & that's usually quite a giggle.

Agreed on the rear camera, clearly a bad design as with all the crap on the roads right now, it becomes fairly useless very quickly.

The only thing i feel a little frustrated with is the Tech, as although my previous D4 about 6yrs ago felt perfectly up to date, it now feels very old & more so when i jump in the Golf R with Adaptive Cruise, Apple CarPlay & a far more modern touchscreen Satnav, but nice to be able to swap between the 2 cars.

That new A8 has really grabbed my attention, so very possible i'll see if my local dealer fancies entertaining a deal when they arrive in showrooms.

I've got invitation for a test drive and small new A8 brochure from local dealer. I guess they are targeting all A8 drivers they have on their list. I'm not going to bother any time soon. I'm happy with old tech and buttons in current car. I don't think I can go for another A8, life is too short and there's too many car models out there. I will see how market looks in 18 months and what's on offer.

My old S8 is still for sale, now second cheapest on Autotrader. I'm glad I never entertained buying it from VWFS at £42K, as it's on the market for £37.5K now. It's a bit sad that such a good car is not selling well. I guess potential costs of repairs after warranty might be discouraging buyers.

Best to call couple of dealers and see what they have. Guildford and Cheshire Oaks already advertising Used Approved D5 on Autotrader.

Hi there - I'm new to PH and own a 2018 A8 3.0 TDi and love it. One niggle however is that the supplied wireless charging cradle is too small for my Samsung S7 (and my wife's S9) - does anyone know if there are alternate cradles available? I can't find anything helpful on Audi's website and the dealer has also drawn a blank.

Time to bump an old thread but my A8 is going back early tomorrow. I just wasn’t getting the chance to use it, it didn’t move between 1st September and Xmas last year. It is sat on 14k miles and has accompanied me to Belgium a few times for work as well as visiting some airport car parks.

I’ll miss it the air suspension though, the ride was great. I could see 43mpg on the motorway according to the OBC.

Someone will get an absolute bargain(!)

There's a few Black Editions on Autotrader. Prices range between 25K and 30K, depending on reg plate and mileage. Oldest are 66, newest 17, haven't seen any 67 yet. I've been watching prices for quite some time in case I want to buy it out.

I extended lease on mine for another year, price came down from 399pcm to 374pcm (10K miles pa). Not a lot, but I didn't want to risk and wait for another quote from VWFS, which could be higher or lower. I decided there's no way I can lease anything similar or better for the same money. Total will come to 16K for 3 years. I bought service package at £350, so service cost will be covered no problem. Will be doing first service ASAP as I'm 1200 miles away and have 1000 to drive on weekend. Also bought set of winter tyres for £550, so original + winters will be ok for the duration of the lease.

Fuel economy from fill ups, not computer: best ever 44mpg, winter driving through Europe, a few times 42mpg mostly on motorways. On low side 33-34mpg and total average from 18K miles is 38mpg. I don't drive in the city except some occasional trips and don't do short runs around the corner. I think average 38mpg is quite good for the car.

I used it for commuting only occasionally, as I worked from home. All other trips are family duty or pleasure trips. Took the car many times to Europe, currently away as well. Car also spent a lot of time at airports car parks.

Had no issues with A8, except rattling trim which was fixed once but it came back recently. Didn't have time to take it to the dealer just for this. Will deal with it together with service. I like the car and if there's no decent lease deal on something good, I may buy it from WVFS or wait for it to come back to the market and then buy it back from trader. But that's decision for next year. I may not need it then, who knows.

Belgium in summer.

Switzerland in Winter.

There's quite a few on AT now, prices still between 25-30K depending on a plate and mileage. Mine is in warranty repair for rattle and rear speaker. 3rd attempt to fix it.

I bookmarked that car in AC Glasgow couple of days ago. Wanted to see how much time it's going to take to sell it.
