Hi all,

I'll be looking at a Mk5 Golf 2.0 TDI (140) to buy soon. It's a 2005 car on 110k miles, so fairly high mileage. I've read a lot of bad press about the 140 PD engine - what should I look out for in particular at this mileage?

It's well serviced with 12 service stamps in the book.

Cheers smile

Nothing is a diesel golf with the good engine. Many of them around with over 200k on.

Really?

My old Golf Gt Tdi 1.9PD 115bhp I had 74mpg on one trip. Mainly it was a 65mpg runaround.

What do the 2.0 Ltd do?

I had a Caddy 1.9tdi at 70 it would only do 25mpg. The 2.0tdi that I had after that was 2 years older and did 55mpg. Several of my mates Had the same thing.

? What

25mpg in top gear at 70mpg in a diesel 1.9 TDI 130/150bhp?
You were drinking flat tyres all round loaded to the hilt a massive roof box but not aerodynamic.

Actually I'd say you likely had a fuel leak.

Cheap and cheerful. Good fuel economy, cost peanuts to buy, own + maintain.

corrosion on the front wings. Lots of mk5 suffered from it.

A friend got his replaced under warranty at 9 years old. Not sure on the detail of that. Length or warranty, if you needed full VW fsh, etc.

AS with all cars of this age it's the history that counts. There are a few issues that could rear their heads at this mileage and age.
As has already been said front wings have a tendency to rust. Also there is the Dual Mass Flywheel issue that will be thinking of giving up the ghost. If it hasn't been changed (along with the clutch hopefully) then it will go soon.
Poor oil change intervals will result in the turbo exploding....but regular 12 month minimum changes using good oil will prolong it's life almost indefinitely. Check that the recall on the injectors has been done (should have earlier in it's life but you never know!).
Google is your friend here to identify what problems can occur.
Having frightened you these are really good cars IMO. SWMBO has 2008 TDI GT 170BHP at a mere 150K (a mere youngster) and apart from main dealer cock ups earlier in its life it has been faultless....er DMF apart!
I used a good indy after the warranty expired who has seen numerous examples now on 250 - 300K. He prefers the Mk4 1.9 jobbies....they can and will do starship mileages. 400 - 500K is not uncommon.
I asked how long ours will last? He said how long is a piece of string.....old Golfs don't die in good hands. Ours will soldier on for a good few years yet! Would I buy one.....at the right price and condition

Throttle valves tend to fail post 100k miles, egr valves sometimes fail too. Throttle valves will blow the engine fan fuse when they go.

There's a common problem with the ABS pump, look out for the ABS and/or traction control warning lights, can be expensive at a main dealer. Also airbag lights come on regularly in high mileage models (usually the plug to the sensor under the passenger seat). As has been said by others, bad corrosion round front wheelarches, although VW will usually honour the 12 year anti-corrosion warranty if it has a decent service history (some main dealers are ok about this and others are s, if you get no luck from one dealer, just go to a different one). I've had three and all had problems with the window mechanism after they reached high mileage.
Overall they don't really deserve their reputation for being reliable, it's just their good reputation/high resale value which keeps them worthwhile repairing when things start going wrong in old age. My son has a 2005 one which would have been scrapped years ago if it had been a Fiat or Renault with the same problems, but in spite of being a clapped out banger, it's still worth repairing as he'd still get a couple of grand for it in a trade in.

None of that stuff has happened to my MK5, so it's 'internet' common vs reality common. It's the most reliable car I've ever owned.

Thanks for the advice all.

I've just found a very early (Feb '04) 2.0 TDI, but in the pictures it has a 5 speed box. I thought all 2.0 TDI's were 6 speed?
